Ok I tried to book something online and the CC charges were 25 quid but visa debit charges were only a quid so I thought go with VISA debit.

This was the first time I'd used the card since A&L became Santander.

Payment went through until I hit the dreaded Verified by VISA scheme.

Strange it was never there with A&L the wording was really strange as well as it taked about an "optional" security measure and if I want to "opt-in" then I had to fill out the form (security checks) and password.

There was no option not to opt-in ;)

However it would not accept the postcode as it was less than 5 digits (Belgium only has a 4 digit postcode) so I looked again at my statements and they hadn't added any B or any 0's to the postcode on my statements.

After trying 3 times I was blocked. Phoning Santander was a waste of time. Took 20 minutes for the guy to finally tell me that to be unblocked I had to fax my passport and copy recto-verso of the card. I have a scanner at home so asked to e-mail a scanned copy but apparently e-mail is not as secure as a fax?

Yesterday I tried to fax the documents but the number was wrong so I had to phone again to get the correct number. Since I'm still waiting to pay I asked them to phone me on my mobile when it was done, do you think they've called?

HAHA No chance!

Why do banks make life so complicated for the customer yet not prevent the millions of pounds in fraud payments each year.

Verified By Visa is a royal pita. Everytime I use it it tells me my password is incorrect, so I create a new one and make a note of it in my password manager. Next time I need to verify, I get told the password is incorrect. This happens every single time.

Concerning that one of the biggest merchants in the world can't even manage to build a user friendly verification system.

IIRC the option to "opt-out" is to hit the button that says "No Thanks"...
The Verified by Visa scheme is optional — if you have a Visa card, you don't have to opt-in — but if I understand correctly retailers have the option to require it for transactions made with Visa cards.

Thus, it's kind of optional, but depending on which retailers you use, it kind of isn't.

Never had any problems myself.

Never had an issue with mine and I've used it for years

With my own card, I have never had an issue with VbV.

When using my dad's card i regularly need to reset it all because apparantly the password is wrong, despite the fact that I know it absolutely is not.

How good VbV is would depend on the bank implementing it imo. Basically, the website you are buying from will redirect you (either completely, or through a frameset or something) to the website of the issuing bank's site and it's down to them to verify you.

So if you find it rubbish, don't blame VbV, switch to a different bank.

I've never really had a problem. Granted, I never, ever remember my password because Barclay's password requirements don't fit in with any of the passwords I normally use, but I just reset it every time and then it goes through.
