I tested one out at a HMV in London yesterday. I foresee lots of eyestrain complaints over the next few months. I'll probably get one when I few more games I want come out.
 
Impressions on graphics quality compared to the 2d images shown so far?

Basically is it as blurry / rough as the screenshots seem to make out, particularly Ridge Racer which looks pretty awful in images and vids even compared to the psp version and am I right in thinking performance wise the 3DS is well beyond the psp right?

I cancelled my pre order but still tempted to pick one up tomorrow, hoping my local game store will have one or two available to test out before parting with the cash.

I'm always really careful with tech so it tends to stay in good condition, like cases on my iPhone 4, not had one other then the Apple socks and it's still mint condition.

Screen protectors I'd kind of get if you used your thumbs on the touch pad, but you have the little pen for that and you barely need to touch it.
 
I hate having to use my thumbs/fingers for the touch screen on the DS, not precise enough, they're too big.

And I agree with your initial comment, I keep my DSi in a case at all times. Unless I lend it to my girlfriend and it comes back with eyeliner on it then I die a little.
