Rant - As if insurance companies aren't already making enough

You are taking up someone's time on the phone, and then to complete paperwork, time = money.
An online system for making these changes would be much more sensible. My first ever car insurance policy was with Norwich Union, and you could do all sorts including adding drivers online without admin charges.
 
I didn't pay anything to change my number plate various times with Aviva, good to know about the charge as I'm with Admiral now!
 
I threatened to leave my Insurer when they said about charging for a car switch = no charge. Might be worth a try.

Alternately leave the plate for the new car and only pay once?

Did that really happen? You can leave but to be honest working for an insurance broker it's not really a bad situation for us. We'd charge a cancelation fee of £50 and send you the balance which makes income per policy higher. With retention rates generally below 30% the customer leaving is not the end of the world.

These are normal business overheads - not something you should be charging on to the customer. Far too many businesses nowadays seem to have forgotten that their overheads are their costs to absorb, not ours.

Oh don't get me wrong.
I don't believe you should get anything for free per say.
I have no objection, for example, when banking is no longer free - they are providing a service and I would expect to pay for it.

It's just when I'm spending x hundreds of pounds on a year's worth of insurance I just find it hard to justify £17.50 for what was literally five minutes work.
I gave him the old plates and I heard him typing the changes in there and then.
He told me he would be sending me new certificates in the post but also emailed me a new certificate which I received before I'd finished on the phone to the guy.
Basically it equates to £210/hour in charges which I just feel is a little steep.

Well, it's a cost and it has to go somewhere.

Essentially there are two ways for the company to operate:

1) Lower premiums and higher fees for changes. This benefits customers who do not need to make any/many changes.

2) Higher premiums and lower/no fees for changes. This benefits customers who do need to make many changes.

I think insurance companies should be free to operate any model they wish, but they should probably publish their fees policy so the customer can more easily assess the likely total cost of insurance over a period of time. Right now you either have to phone up every company to find it's fees or know from experience, and that's a bit crap.
 
most are finding it hard to break even, they take all the premium they generate and then place it all on red or black :)

The legal costs are what get on my nerves. Sometimes you wonder if it would be cheaper just to split the costs 50:50 automatically regardless of fault without the need for all the legal rubbish. I had an accident where the damage to the other party was under £400 and the case dragged on for 3 years before they backed down.
 
Legal wise my accident from 2009 still has not been settled. They are debating over about £500.
 
I love Admiral atm! they've just quoted my next insured year (doing 10months for quicker NCB) at £801.75 :) that's down from this years £1764, I'm slightly happy as you can probably guess.

EDIT: Actually can anyone confirm to me that using a 10month policy counts as another NCB?
