Hey guys just got this card 2 days ago upgraded from a gtx 480, unlocked it to 6970.
Now for some weird reason on MSI Afterburner the gpu usage goes strange all the time, sometimes every 2 seconds the gpu usage goes to 33% and sometimes going up to 70% and back down to 0% for no reason what so ever and the temps at idle get higher around 50ish.
Right now the idle temp is at 60c and I am getting concerned there may be something wrong with the card and every now and then the gpu usage has jumped up to 60%.
So I am suffering from strange high spikes of gpu usage and also with that my idle temps see to be increasing, I have reinstalled drivers but that hasn't helped, should I try reflashing again?
I have attached a screenshot to show the weird behavior of my card.

How many monitors are attached and when you say idle does that include not using a web browser or any other piece of software, even anti virus scanners?

It's just 1 monitor alone, the browser was running in the background with those 60c temps but even when I closed everything I sitll had high temps, I have even just flashed back to the 6950 bios and getting high tempos again although not as high as before but the gpu usage is still crazy check this out..

Ok, can you make sure the fan speed is set to default auto, restart the computer, don't have any programs open including a browser, check windows task manager to see if any other programs are running which are not required and then just leave it for a couple of minutes to see if its the same.

If it is the same, can you use the Catalyst uninstall and then reinstall the latest official website drivers and try the above again please.

Usage jumping upwards for very short periods of time whilst on the desktop is normal. You're either looking at some flash based video or something else that your internet browser of choice has chosen to use the GPU for acceleration.

It happens on mine, do not freak out.

As for the high idle temps, do you have the central heating on? I have a room thermometer and right now it's 20c. My case is approx 40c and my 6950 with shaders unlocked is idling at 41c.

I am in the same boat as you OP. I have XFX 6950 but the issue is exactly the same.

Upgrade to 6970 bios, figured I didn't need it and the card started making noise under load, so restored the bios without an issue.

The usage and temps just go up and down randomly, I've seen it sit at 60C with just one screen (1920x1080,DVI) with no programs running at all. I have also reinstalled the catalyst and switched to bios 2 (via switch on card) but nope....issue is still there.

Although I didn't write it down, but I am pretty sure the card pretty much sat at 41C idle before it was flashed.

Very odd!

i have 1 at 48 degrees and other at 66 degrees on idle, spacing issue in case for me. 2 monitors turned on, 3rd is off, just this page up = no gpu usage.
