7.1 Amp and speakers suggestions please:)

Hi,

If I wanted a good Amp and really good 7.1 speakers and had say upto 1000 quid to spend, what do you think I should go for?

Ta:)

Something like a Denon 1911 and a Q-Acoustics 5.1 pack plus another pair of speakers would be about on budget.

NOTE - while this will be a good setup, it would use solely budget components. Compared to a Samsung "home cinema" it would be outstanding. Compared to a mid range stereo setup it would be a poor.

What are you using currently? Is this just for films? Are you willing to buy second hand? Do you NEED 7.1?

£1000 is a tricky amount for a complete set up, although you can get some decent entry level stuff from the big names. First off, I'd crop 7.1 to 5.1. As long as you have the space to play with positioning, you'll get a perfectly acceptable surround effect, and even in future, I'd rather go for 5.1 with dipole rear speakers than 7.1. with four normal side/rears. Your budget doesn't really allow for a 5.1 set with decent floorstanders, so you'd be looking at the best bookshelf 5.1 set you could get for half your budget, and a decent receiver with the other half. Given you're probably sat at your PC as well, I'd imagine you'd want the stereo pair and center to be on your desk?

For £500 and under, there's options like the older Wharfdale Diamond 10 set (think it's just the sub that's an older model), Mordaunt Short Alumini, Q-Acoustics 2000, Tannoy have a 5.1 at <£500, there's some cheaper Kefs... the list goes on. You'd really need to read up on each of these (AVForums is a good place to start) to give you a better idea of what they sound like, since often preferences when it comes to sound signatures between brands are quite subjective.

Not sure about the receiver (again so many to choose from), but it's important it takes up a good amount of your budget as well, as without good amplification your speakers won't perform to their full potential.

Hi,

You're going to buy what you set your heart on, but if it were me I'd go for a better 5.1 system with dipole/bipole rears rather than diluting the budget on a 7.1 system with direct radiating speakers. The reason I suggest this is two-fold...

Unless you have a room big enough with a large enough gap between the seating and the rear then the rear sound-field from the extra speakers won't have space to develop properly.

Second, driving those extra rear speakers saps a little power from all the rest. That means a little less control and less dynamics overall. Your intended amp might be rated at a gazillion watts per channel, but in reality it's all coming from the same power supply connected to the mains socket at the wall; so unless your amp consumes a gazillion watts of mains power then it ain't going to deliver that to the speakers.

Aye, what you could do is find a 5.1 set you like so you know what you're after, then buy the center and front pair separately (any decent company's speaker packages are bundles of their speakers which can be bought individually), grab some of the rears suggested above and look at someone like BK for your sub. While it's important your front three match tonally the rears and sub are less important and it doesn't matter as much if it's a different make (as long as they're good mind! ;)).

I can recommend you the latest Yamaha amplifiers. I have rx-467 (£159) 5.1 with 7.1 out for two additional active speakers. To get too excited about 7.1 There is hardly anything out there with 7.1 sound.
It's also 3D ready, so HDMI 1.4!
