Just read this in the Times and saw it on BBC just a moment ago.

Here's a few snippets from the Times;

The rifleman (Sergeant Dipprasad Pun) was sentry for a fortified compound in the village of Rahim Kalay in Afghanistan when he heard digging in front of his base.
....
he edged on to a low roof, carrying with him a rifle, heavy machinegun and two radios. "I could see Taleban were digging in an IED in front of the gate"
...
He fired a grenade launcher, underslung on his SA80 rifle but that provoked a "360-degree firefight".
...
He fought on for 15 minutes alone whilst 3 Gurkhas and 1 interpreter believed he had been killed.

Gets crazier.

small arms fire continued. He fired back with a grenade launcher but then realised the Taleban were climbing over the wall towards him.
When he tried to shoot at them he found that his gun was out of ammunition. In desperation he then picked up a sandbag as his only weapon. Someone had failed to tie it shut at one end and the sand ran out at his feet.
Finally, he grabbed the heavy metal tripod for the machine gun. Shouting "Marchu Talai!" - "I kill you" in Nepalese - he hurled it at the nearest man. The tripod knocked the insurgent to the ground and the man fled.

Oh wait, there's more!

Still under attack he then tried to call in a mortar bombardment on his own position, but the mortar battery failed to fire and he saw two more Taleban advancing. Then, what Sergeant Pun described as his "clever mind" remembered that a Claymore mine was already armed near by. He squeezed a handheld detonator and the Claymore blasted ball bearings across a 55 yard radius in front of him.

A few facts and figures.

During his 20 minute defence, he used;

-250 rounds of machinegun ammunition
-180 rounds of rifle ammunition
- six phosphorus grenades
-six high explosive grenades
-five underslung grenades
-one claymore
-machine gun tripod
-sandbag

My word do Gurka's walk around carrying their own weight in ammo and explosives? Respect thats one hard man.

Well deserved. Although someone may want to talk to him about ammunition conservation... :D

Noooooo!

It takes long enough to teach them that ripping people apart with their hands and their kukri isn't standard procedure.

So what that they use a few more rounds, at least they are using them....:)

Heh!

Have any of you ever met a Gurkha? It will amaze you more when you realise that they are quite small :o

Fantastic fella and a very courageous act. Well done that man.

Gurkhas have served the British Army with loyalty and distinction for 200 years. Amazing chaps who get nothing but my admiration.

Utterly astonishing... a news post that wasn't RSS and run ;)

Seriously though, where do these Gurkhas learn to be so mental? Are they all fathered by Chuck Norris or something??

Living fairly close to Aldershot I see Gurkhas all the time. Some of them are traffic wardens - I wonder how many people mess with them!

When my mother-in-law was given an MBE by The Queen the two soldiers flanking her were Gurkhas. That says it all really!
