Tell me about the boxster 3.2s

Won't tracking it mean having a decent warranty would be ideal, considering you are potentially going to be giving it a bit of a trashing?

Im pretty sure most warrantys wouldn't cover track use. I could be wrong though.

Is that 02 one from herts motors or something?

It's the same one I was looking at....don't

Not worth going to see this one? Its on the low side budget wise which would free up a few k to spend bringing it up to scratch?

Pretty much, the reason I am buying one is to counter the receeding hairline ;)

You live in Essex, all my mates in Essex are a few pounds over and receding, its the way it goes in Essex, us over here in Kent (gods country) different kettle of fish :D

I somtimes look out of my flat window where on a clear day you can see over to kent. Sometimes I stand there and think just how much better life would be living in the garden of england :D.

Now I know.

I hear you... the only problem here is that I cant find one nationally that meets my requirements. The one I have found is a fair bit cheaper and has more miles. I am going to see three of them at the weekend.

To be honest I actually prefer the shape of the 986 but the interior of the 987 - its a prettier car and I think will age better than the 987 once both cars are outdated, if you see what I mean

Ughh.

Didn't Spie on here have a 911 turbo he got rid of because the tip was so awful?

I dont know what Spie did but there's nothing awful about that gearbox, if you ask me anyway :)

Also they suit the turbo even more than a normally aspirated, again if you ask me.

No idea... I know I read about a Ferrari somewhere. Having now scoured the web for cars I have shortlisted 5 ranging from 10 to 15k and all of them are 986's.

Only one is my ideal spec but I am willing to take any of 3 colours. Silver, Dark Blue and Black. I guess now I will just have to see what tomorrow brings. I could end up coming home with a new car :)

I would hope you'd get a car inspected even if you don't want the warranty. I've heard the inspections can highlight the car being only a few months away from four figure bills etc so well worth havng.

This is a must, any car I buy will be getting a full inspection by a qualified porsche garage. :)

Thought I would update the thread with my mission today.

First off went to see a black Boxster S. The car was 120 miles away, it was an 02 plate with black leather, 18" Porsche design wheels and priced at 10k. Drove into the dealers and walked over to inspect the car. Firstly the car was a bit dirty so I had a little while walking around and noticed that the paintwork looked ok on first inspection. However getting a little closer I noticed that the rear quater panel had been resprayed and very badly. On top of that part of the boxster s logo is missing from the rear - alarm bells are ringing already...

Anyway about the time that I noticed this a guy comes walking over with battery charger in hand, opens the door of the car and starts setting the alarm off by attaching the charger to the car. After a few minutes looking at the guy and not saying anything he still can't get the alarm to stop or the car to start, so he says and I quote "It's ok mate they all do this if you don't start them for a few days". As he said this I look over at my brother-in-law who has owned one, he gives me the nod and we walk away.

The next car we went to see was an 02 plate black car with tan leather, 18" wheels... bose stereo and more toys priced at closer to 11k. The one we talked about earlier on in the thread. This car was more interesting car, it was straight paintwork wise with possibly a little touching up on the front end in its life. After looking over the car thoroughly there didn't seem to be anything majorly out of place for its age.

Inspection on the brakes showed that the rear disks and pads needed replacing but the rest of the car from the outside seemed sound. Inside the tan leather was fair, a little worn but the car had done high 60k and was 9 years old so you forgive it of that and it can be repaired and treated anyway. I started it up and noticed that the clutch was very heavy and a bit high so the clutch it seems is on its way out. With the engine ticking over everything sounded as you would expect only I hear a slight tapping at about 2k rmp which continues down to idle and is only cured by dipping the clutch, anyway the clutch wasn't slipping and the car wasn't juddering when pulling away on the clutch so this didn't put me off entirely as we are pretty confident that the tapping is from the clutch.
At this point I thought that I had the budget to get the car where I wanted it to be so after the inspection I looked at the history and there is plenty of documentation for the car, not much money spent on it mind during all of the cars history and the main dealer services for the past two years mention the heavy clutch so all is good.

From my calculations the car needs 2.5k to bring it up to scratch. So I start thinking about the budget but when the guy comes in with a cheeky six and a half grand for my current car I have to walk away. Truth be told the repairs on the Porsche are quite high, even before any inspection and my car is an 08 plate car with 30k on the clock, full main dealer history and a glasses guide price almost 2k higher to trade.

I didn't get to see any more today but from the two I did find out that buying a 10k-11k Porsche from a dealer might not be the way to go. I am going to take this a little further though and visit a couple more from both dealers and private sales in the price range before discounting buying a 10-11k Porsche in favour of a more expensive one. I may also have to sell the current car privately to get a decent figure for it.

Seriously if you have got 16k spend 16k, i think i said that before.

If time is on your side, give Henry or Tom at 911Virgin a ring, tell them your budget and let them get you one. http://www.911virgin.com/ see what they may have been offered, best Porsche indy in my opinion.

Try Portiacraft in North London too, see what they have got, going to random used car dealers to buy a 12k Porsche is going to end in you wasting a lot of weekends.

This is exactly why I ended up going for a 2.7. All the £10k S models that I looked at were exactly how you described. I then looked at 2.7's and got a better condition car for the same money.

And really don't go for the 18" wheels if you want to do track days.

Little update on the thread... Went to see a car today - A 51 plate boxster S, Black with grey leather, bose sound system, 17" wheels and 40k miles with a full service history. The car was one that I happened to see on my journeys close to home and was not on auto trader so having looked it over the night I spotted it I decided to go and take a second look. Fully expecting to walk away again.

Anyway after looking it over I took it for a test drive and well it was nice enough that I put a deposit down on it to collect this tuesday or wednesday subject to it passing an inspection.

Didn't spend the full amount and ended up spending 11k so will have a little bit in reserve. I know you guys told me to spend the full ammount and for what I had I could have bought a 987 but to be honest I felt much more comfortable spending 11-12 k than I did spending 16-18k.

So here I am a few days away from owning my first rwd two seater sports car.... exciting times!
