I'm trying to work out what my monthy outgoings might be if I get a place on my own. I had my own flat for a couple of years about 5 years ago, but I can't remember what my gas, water & electric were - plus I imagine prices have changed since then.

What would you say is about average for 1 person these days for each of gas, elec & water per month? Based on 1 shower a day, a couple of washing machine cycles per week and the usual TV/Sky, laptop and kitchen stuff?

Water = £23 per month (whole year payable in advance)
Leccy and Gas = £85 average (less during summer, more during winter, more if you leave your PC on 24 hours a day)
Kitchen 'stuff' - well -- including food or not?

My last quarterly bill was

Water £44
Gas £52
Elec £51

was really pleased with that! with british gas too!

By 'kitchen stuff' I meant running the fridge, microwave etc on eleccy.

£80pm sounds good, and isn't far off what I thought I was paying before.

That would leave me with about £700 once all rent, bills and personal outgoings are paid (not including food & petrol). Enough to live on?

Yea £160 a week? Doesn't sound like any problem if your a normal lad with normal interests ..

Also - don't forget to get the 'single person discount' on yer council tax.

And if you work from home (or are at home all day for any reason) add 30% to the leccy/gas cost :(

Yeah I factored in the CT single person discount - about £90pm I think.

I'm office based so won't be running up any heavy usage bills.

I fudged the maths slightly, looks like £770 left a month, not £700.

I'm factoring a minimum of £500 a month left over after mortgage, all household bills and food and fuels are paid. So entertainment, car insurance, maintenance and toys will come out of this. The rest to be saved if there is any left.

Studio flat £425pm
Council tax £80pm for 9 months
electricity £15-25 per month
Gas £25pm (cold winters are cold)
Phone line £14 per month
Broadband £20 - 20mb

Totals £164

Plus TV license if you'll be watching tv as its being broadcast. That's about £20 per month as you pay half of next year in advance or something like that.

If you want pay tv then thats another £16-50 per month depending on what you want

I usually pay 15 quid a fortnight for rent
10 in summer 20 in winter a fortnight for gas
10-15 ish for elect a fortnight

This is just me in my 1 bed flat.

How the - what the -

Do you go home and sit in a freezing cold cardboard box in the corner of your living room, in the dark?

Im at work 8:30-4:30 shower x 2 everyday day and heating on for a few hours, dont really cook big meals often.

Summer bills should be nice, flat is only 18 months old so never really gets cold :)
