So .. apparently an inquest has found that when Derek Bird went mental with a shotgun and killed a dozen people, it was in actual fact, unlawful.

Well fantastic guys. Thanks for all the hard work gosh you're very clever, clever people you know. Now go on, have a shed load of taxpayers money for forming such an astute and clever observation. Thanks for that, we'd have never known ... [/sarcasm] :/

And as an extra bit of GENIOUS you tell us that when he blew his own brains out with the same shotgun - this was SUICIDE! WHAT INSIGHTFULNESS! What amazing clarity you offer! Cor blimey -- you've certainly earnt our taxes you have ..

Well obviously, everybody knew that. However, this inquest was more about finding out how the events unfolded, what lessons can be learnt and so that loved ones could maybe try to understand what happened.

Money well spent imho.

agree that it needs to happen, it was a massive event and it pays to see if lessons can be learnt about how to better deal with a similar situation in the future.

Wound up by the linked article though "the darker side of Derrick Bird" apparently going on a killing rampage isn't a dark enough side for the beeb

Exactly and part of the legal process:

Inquests

An inquest is a legal inquiry into the medical cause and circumstances of a death. It is held in public - sometimes with a jury - by a coroner, in cases where the death was:

•violent or unnatural
•took place in prison or police custody

or when

•the cause of death is still uncertain after a post-mortem

Coroners hold inquests in these circumstances even if the death occurred abroad (and the body is returned to Britain). If a body is lost (usually at sea) a coroner can hold an inquest by order of the Secretary of State if death is likely to have occurred in or near a coroner's area of jurisdiction.

If an inquest is held, the coroner must inform:

•the married or civil partner of the deceased
•the nearest relative (if different from the above)

and

•the personal representative (if different from the above)

Relatives can also attend an inquest and ask questions of witnesses - these questions can only be about the medical cause and circumstances of the death. Relatives can also ask a lawyer to represent them, but there is no legal aid available for this.

It may be particularly important to have a lawyer to represent you if the death was caused by a road accident, an accident at work, or other circumstances which could lead to a claim for compensation. You cannot get legal aid for this.

While it may seem obvious it is due process as has been noted, we can't simply circumvent it because "it's obvious innit" - where's the cut off between obvious and a bit of doubt making it worth investigating further?

The inquest into Derrick Bird's rampage is not a waste of taxpayers money, there was a few lessons learnt after this inquest, the families had to know what happended to their loved ones and now can have some sort of closure,i think your being a bit insensitive britboy4321,there has been a lot of coverage on our local news about this inquest in detail, living in the area where this happended i feel sorry for the people of west cumbria who had to endure the grief and rebuild their lives,so give the people a bit of slack why dont you and grow up.

Yes it might seem obvious and unnecessary but if you were actually innocent of a crime that seemed just as obvious wouldn't you want the full extent of justice put into play in your conviction?

Unlawful killing != murder != manslaughter.

It helps if you understand what you're talking about before you get cross about these things.

Argh. One phrase I am so sick of hearing. 'Lessons will be learned.'

What's the problem? next time someone snaps and goes on a gun rampage, they will make sure they bring the right mops to clean your loved ones brain and skull fragments off the pavement. Result.
