My friend asked me to install a new motherboard in his computer.

Now this is the first time I've done this, but I can't get it to work.

The thing is when I press the power button on the case nothing happens :(

Now I followed all the instructions and checked all the connections. Apart from the case and CD drive all the parts are new. Looking at my PC (that I bough pre-built) the only difference I can see is that the connectors between the case power button on my (newer) PC is a single connector with different wires coming out, but on my friends case there are 2 separate connectors for the HDD light and the power switch.

Does anybody know what the problem could be? I've tried using a different power supply to no avail.

Look in the motherboard manual for the correct position for the cables on the motherboard. Plug it in, if it doesn't work flip the plug 180 degrees. Most cables are marked with what plug it is and so is the motherboard, and blown up in manual to make it easy to see, but they often don't show which way round they go.

Off topic though, your friend asked you to install a new motherboard knowing you hadn't done it before? Brave friend lol :p

I installed a motherboard in an old case a few months ago and It didnt work at first - just make sure you have the power switch connector in the right place.

You could also try shorting the power on pins (power switch pins), on the motherboard and see if anything happens/

Oh my dear god I feel such a bloody fool.

I used a different plug. The damn fuse had gone in the power cable.

I spent the best part of a damn hour trying to fix the thing, and is was a blown fuse!

I'm the stupidest man in the whole damn world. I'm going to call my University and give my IT degree back.

Very apt gif there. But you got an IT degree having never installed a motherboard?!! Wow! lol

But don't feel bad, we learn by experience. I too have done some daft things when building PCs. I don't have a degree though :p

IT, not fancy computer building. I learned about business finance, how to draw graphs of product development, teamwork theory, and project management paperwork.

The closest I got to working on actual computers was one lesson where the lecturer was sick so we learned how to set up a server.

Well I knew far more about computers than anyone else he knew, and he'd just dropped a fair amount of his paycheck on new parts and didn't want to have to pay someone to put them in. Also that's what Instruction manuals are for.

Yeah, we all have to start somewhere but still, massive trust issue. I mean if you broke it installing it, it would it would have ended up being cheaper to pay a shop to do it. But of course, kudos for having the balls to do it yourself. Hope he paid you for the stress :p
