Alright this is something that I tried to address some days ago but haven't gotten to the root of. A few days ago my GPU's (6950) temperature was marked by MSIAfterburner as around 30. That's fine, but one day the average temps (on idle I might add) became a solid 50+ and they've been there ever since.

I realise it's been warmer in the UK than usual, but its dark and cold now, and after running my system a little it still shoots to that temperature. Could there be any reason for this?

Is it powering a second monitor now but wasn't before?

Check your clocks.

Single monitor idle should be around 250/150 while dual monitor idle pops them up to 450/1250 and video 500/1250. I've noticed mine goes up to the 50s when running my second monitor.

There could be an application running that causes the card to set high clocks.

MSI Afterburner could also be keeping the clocks unneccesarily high.

Warmer by 20 degrees and he's not realised?

Have you checked the fan isn't stuck or clogged up??

I mean he might not have realised the temperature of his room go up, but then 20 degrees is a lot, and I'm gunna stop now because i'm slightly drunk and have no idea what I'm on about!

Is the card coming out of its performance profile in desktop, not sure on 6850 clock speeds but my 6870 was sticking at 915/1050 i think. Rather than 100/100 or 300/300 mine now seems to have changed to. So my idle temps would fall a lot slower, if fans etc are ok and no clogged stuff, check that out. I ended up messing about with extended desktop settings and kinda fixed it but a reinstall of drivers seems to have done the trick for me.
