looking to buy one of these.

Any owners got anythings I should look out for or know of any forums I could use to gather info please

muchly appreciated

If you are after a Mk4 my choice would be a Gti Anniversary, that's just me though :)

Absolutely not - worst car you could possibly buy. The are ridiculously overpriced and scene taxed - you may as well get a regular 1.8T GTI which is fundamentally exactly the same car - oh no, you miss the bodykit and some wheels - and is LOADS cheaper.

Twice the price, less power, crappy 1.8T instead of smooth v6 and fwd. Why because its got shiny wheels and dashboard inserts? :p

Not really sure why people buy the newer golfs, sadly the "golf" thing is done better in other cars nowadays.

Interestingly I saw a Golf R32 with a driving school sign on the top of it today (newish, maybe 08?)

I have a 4Mo and love it to bits. It has generally been very reliable. In nearly eight years of ownership I can only think of a handful of times it has let me down:

Dead battery - well it was 6 years old by then!
Flat tyre - I blame the potholes around here!
Split coolant hose - Long story, self inflicted, can't blame the car!
Broken clutch pedal - Common fault on a lot of cars not just a Golf (a tab of weld breaks which is designed as a safety feature in the event of a bump, but they often break after a few years).

So that's one genuine breakdown in almost 8 years. Oh, and one of the radio buttons is a little sticky. Errr, that's it (the damn thing is bound to break down now that I've tempted fate).

I love the engine. It's smooth and has a lot of torque. However don't expect a sports car. They are heavy and reasonably quick but not amazingly fast. I find mine perfect as a family car as I have one with four doors. The boot is a little small however, due to the 4wd.

Common faults on VW's of that age tend to be electrical but mine has been fine.

You can get the standard GTI up to 190bhp for £400, as people have already correctly pointed out the Anniversary simply isn't worth the premium.

Wayn0r has a Honda S2000 IIRC. Though he did have an R32? Is that what you are thinking of?

Yeah I keep getting my facts wrong today, and cant be bothered to check.
I thought R32 was just a new name for the V6 and not a completely different model. Either way, his Golf was a nice one.

Despite being relatively cheap to purchase, the V6 is thirsty and eats tyres. Apparently they tend not to make their quoted power. I'd see if you can get the 180 version GTI (don't bother with the Anniversary!).
