6990 or 590 ?

a single gtx 580 is faster then a 6970 especially when u crank on the aa and u see a big difference so a slightly slower gtx 580 will still beat a 6970. There is my logic (and seeing a lot of the reviews apart from the volt problem which is now fixed the 6990 is beaten by the 590 in most tests)

Dunno about that mate? All the tests i have seen the ATI beats the 590. I just put it down to release time and drivers.

Actually it's pretty obvious the 6990 is faster than the 590, I think 90% of people here would agree with that also.
I think the better xfire scaling helps the 6990 out also...

trisp go back and read some more reviews if you are being serious. I personally think you are trolling though.

The 580gtx is downclocked 30% in the 590gtx, and SLI scaling is now I would say averaging 5% worse than xfire, which is also why 2x6970's close the gap on 2x580gtx's these days, not massively but the gap does get smaller, the 6970 is simply not even close to 30% slower than a 580gtx, the 590gtx overclocked isn't bad. Over volting the cards is potentially driver protected now, but that also means lower overclocks.

THe 590gtx has one advantage, noise, and when you take an average across most sites the 6990 isn't that much louder, Anandtech are the only guys who only showed(initially) 6990 noise at idle and in Furmark, but not in gaming, completely different thing. its louder, just not as much as people got it into their heads from Anandtechs misleading(purposefully? or just incompetant) review.

Is flickering still an issue with the 6990?

With my 5970 no matter what driver I used I still had issues in games such as BFBC2 and Crysis 2 demo with textures flickering in games..

why is thers such a large gap in price with the 590 and 6990 in UK and Ireland and yet in US they preaty much average out at the same price around $700?...where is the huge difference in price coming from?

I'm in the same boat as you sold my 5970 and looking to purchase either 590 or 6990, Im edging towards the 590 myself due to the noise issue and drivers issues I had with my 5970

what about the 590 melting card drivers?
i had a 5970 for a year and the drivers were fine within a couple of months after realese

I'd get two 6950 flashed to 6970s instead, the 6990 is too expensive and the cooler is poo. The 6950s will give you better performance for less cash.

Agreed with he above, I have done this and they are faster 30fps in heaven benchmarks than my 5970. Plus 4gb of vram is pretty sweet, I run 3 24" screens and am more than happy with the 6950's (6970 clocks and shaders) for £200 notes a piece.

The 590 is more expensive and less powerful, this is quite clear (especially considering multiple screens). It would be dubious to base the decision on factors other than price and performance imo in this case.
