What came out of my exhaust!?

Hi Guys,

Running around in a 2002 Range Rover at the min, left the garage last night and parked up in my yard at home no problem.

Anyway had to pop out and upon return my missus noticed what looked like someone hair coming out the exhaust!

I pulled it out and there is loads of it, it's like wire wool but straight.

I assuming this is the sound deadening? Do I need to put it back in the exhaust?

You assume correctly. Probably no big deal for now if it's not getting noisy, but you should probably budget for a new backbox at some point.

The perforated tube inside the silencer has rotted out.

Its the packing inside the silencer as said the tube inside the silencer has rotted out so there is nothing to hold the packing in place. Personally I would think about a new backbox sooner rather than later as the packing could block the exhaust preventing it from running or possible damage.

I always throught it was from the catalytic convertor but I'm probably quite wrong.

Many years ago my mum's Fiesta (Zetec engine) was running rough, spluttering at low revs and giving awful fuel economy. Various bits were changed to no avail until, one day, I turned up at her house and noticed 'hair' coming out of the exhaust. I pulled it and reams and reams of the stuff came out. I took it for a drive and it was like a different car.

We never changed the backbox and I sold the car on eBay for her.

LOL, our MD used to have this horrible old Civc and he started the car up to go home, it made this loud cough and fired what looked like a badger out the exhaust.

Get it sorted! This happened to my old car a few years ago. So much came loose it blocked the exhaust and damaged the engine.

There are two exhausts one on each side, replacement it is.
