Hi guys
im kinda new to setting up a computer. ive got a bog standard graphics card, and want an affordable yet powerful gaming HD card. Id like to be qable to play modern warfare 2 on highest settings, and other popular games without hitches

This caught my eye on ******, the asus gtx 550, would this spec suffice?

My setup is :
64GB solid state drive
4GB dual-channel memory
Asus P5K-E
windows 7 64-bit

thanks a lot :)

You can't post that sites link here, as it's a competitor.

I checked the link anyway as I know the missing letters, but that card isn't worth bothering with from the comments I'd heard on here.

Have a look at the AMD 5850 on offer on OCUK instead, much better card and cheaper too at £108.

so itll run modern-day games on high settings, and play HD movies?

what are the main specs to look out for, shader clock/core clock etc?

The 5850 will run the Cod games nicely and play hd movies with ease. It is a powerful card. Also, one particular advantage of the 5850 is that it overclocks very well. It comes with 725mhz core but can easily reach 900-1000mhz. Go for it! Will beat a 550 by quite a large margin

Yes it will play any movie format with ease and I can count the games it won't max outright on my fingers. As far as specs go, well it depends, they are seldom a clear indication of comparative performance best to google some benchmarks/reviews and go from there.

Naturally this is all assuming the rest of your rig won't bottleneck the new graphics card too severely.

What monitor resolution do you run ? Screen size is a significant factor in choosing a GPU. Considering the modest component specs it would probably not be wise to spend much more due to diminishing returns.

ok cool

the xfx hd 6950 that Strepsils recommended looks like a good buy, especially compared to the "competitors" :D

Decent choice indeed, but do note that your CPU will likely hold it back a bit, will not be using the card to its full potential.

Don't get me wrong, having a fast card is awesome but think of your CPU as the speed limit when eyeing that shiny new supercar. Or perhaps its just the pragmatist in me questioning the wisdom of taking a sports car to the city streets. :p
