I bought it privately with 128K on the clock for £4200 in Nov 2010. I know I payed a slightly higher price for it, but it was a 1 owner car, garaged and generally very well looked after with an extensive history which gave me confidence to buy it.
I've had no problems with it so far and the only cost to me has been the 132K service which was carried out by an Volvo independent specialist costing £180.

I've got it booked in locally to have the alloys refurbished next week, then tyres and MOT (and tax.. expensive month) the week after. There's a few marks on the car that I'd like to get seen to, but overall it's in reasonable condition for its age.

Impressions?

Well coming from my transporter it's a very comfortable ride, super quiet once crusing with no wind noise, lovley. It has a pretty impressive turn of pace for a big old thing too, the semi-auto mode is fun but honestly only gets used every now and again when I'm in the right mood.
It's got some nasty budget tyres on currently so I'll look forward to the extra grip when the new rubber is on, having said that I haven't had it step out or loose traction yet!
Talking of traction, it performed admirably in the snow just after I bought it... it managed to crawl up very snowy single track roads whilst in winter mode that other stuff was struggling on :D

Economy, I get 35+ on a long run and 25+ chugging about on short trips...

Although I miss my van and one day I'll have another, the wafting and cruising ability of this thing is just what I was after so I'm very happy.

Comments welcomed... :)

nice example, i used to get around 25mpg out of my S70R auto.
the rica ecu's really make these things brutal, i had a 302 on mine and the increase was just
iirc they remove the boost cut in 1st and 2nd gears and raise boost pressure from 10 - 12 psi to 16 - 18 psi :D
i managed to pick mine up from ebay

I've been looking around at the RICA Stuff, but the nearest place I could find that offered the service was in Nottingham, did you have something else that can be fitted easily yourself and if you need to put a 'map' or whatever on it, would I need a laptop with a certain hook-up cable?

Also, do you have any experience with RICA and practicalities/servicing? I couldn't find a definite answer to if the map would be wiped when servicing/updating software. I assume your fuel economy dropped after install too?

Watch out for the gearboxes on these, my S60 T5 geartronic was on it's way out and I was looking at a £2k repair bill. Generally a good idea to have the gearbox oil changed at some point to keep it in good health. Lots of info on the enthusiast forums.

the rica was the whole ecu unit and was a simple plug and play affair, as long as the car its coming from is an auto x70 series with the same 2.3 engine then it will be fine (2nd hand only). although the std T5s run a 15g turbo whereas the R models run 16t's on the auto and 18t's on the manual.

most places will offer a swap out on your ecu so yes your old map will be gone, i still had both ecus so it was easy for me to swap between the two.

there are 2 maps available iirc for the 2.3 T5 one is 280 which can run both 95 and super unleaded and the other is 302 which can only run the higher octane fuel. as for fuel economy its not bad but you do feel compelled to spin up the turbo more ;)

deffo make sure your gearbox oil is fresh, and theres also a cooler mod you can do that will cool the oil

loads of info over at vpcuk.org :)

Thanks very much for the info, turns out there is a place Doncaster way that is a 'RICA Agent'... I may well give them a ring on Monday for a quote

Sounds like the 280 is the one for me.

theres a place called HLM run by hamish in bromsgrove that did them at £150 for a while, not sure if he's still doing them but might be worth a check

Yeah the Dolby Pro Logic setup is VERY impressive!

Torch - Just checked his website and he still has the offer listed but for the generation previous... I'll still give him a ring and give you several beers if you manage to save me ~£300ish!! :)

I am looking to replace a van with a large estate and I have the same budget as you. Did you consider any other vehicles? I have been looking at Mk3 Mondeo Estate's too. Haven't looked at a V70 in the flesh but the interior looks a nice place to be.

There is a nicely spec'd V70 on Autotrader but it's the 2.4 Diesel and 230k miles. Not sure I could stomach spending £4k on that as it'd be so hard to sell on after a couple of years (I do about 40-50k a year).

I looked at fast estates sub £5K so for me it was V70's, Octavia VRS's and Mondeo ST220's... With your milage your probably looking at diesels but as far as interiors go the Volvo IMO was better than the competition, the seats are just epic and for your milage you'd love them.
There should be plenty of V70 2.4 D5 SE's about... just try and find a well specd one, 4.5K should see sub 150K at least.

Do the V70 diesels have epic parts costs?

A fuel pump for a diesel Mondeo is £1500 for example. That puts me off them a bit, even to the extent of looking at a petrol!

I cant really comment on the Volvo diesel parts prices as it's not something that concerns me, someone more knowledgeable on here maybe?

definetely get in touch cos if my memory serves me right then the 2.3 engine was carried across from the phase 1's ;)
