73% Steam deal - SEGA Mega Drive Classics Collection

After a bit of research I found that for people looking for a quality d-pad possibly the best option is to get a PS2 controller and use a PS2 to PC USB converter.

Given that the d-pads on most current gamepads are appalling this could be a worthwhile investment.....

That's good news about the 360 pad.
Thinking about it, these games might be ideal for my basic lappy.
Gonna buy, I will have week without my PC while my Sandybridge board gets swapped.

I can never understand why Revenge of Shinobi is never on any collection on any platform.

Yeah for the Sega MegaDrive Ultimate Collection for 360/PS3, this was one of the most weird exclusions. If they have Shinobi 3, why the hell not it's predecessor. Shadow Dancer is another one that could be included too.

Sword of vermillion was fantastic. As mentioned it was expensive but wow what an engrossing game of its day.

If only they had Saturn games (Shining force 3 and Panzer Dragoon saga pls Sega)

I'm not sure if you remember, but the original release of Revenge of Shinobi included a cameo of Godzilla (a smallish Godzilla, but defo Godzilla, he could kill you with 1 lash of his tail or 2 breathes of his fire, iirc). There was a copyright issue so what Sega did was introduce a Spiderman look alike instead(he's in the UK release, unless they brought out a 3rd version which I'm not aware of)! Maybe there has been an issue over this, I dunno. What I do know is that Revenge of Shinobi was a far superior outing for our hero then the 3rd one for me. It got classic ratings in almost all the UK mags at the time, all 2 of them! Nah there might of been 3.

I don't know what you use to play these games on the PC, controller wise, if you do. But I find the d-pad on modern controller far less sensitive to the old controllers, which makes it very tricky to double jump in Revenge of Shinobi, and this skill is essential to master, quite early on in the game actually.

I was peeved about its exclusion from seemingly all the collection packs *looking at the 360* as I would have liked some of the extras, and it would have added more to my Revenge of Shinobi collection.

I do however have both the Japanese and English version on cartridge (Godzilla & Spiderman :) ), so when I get the chance to have a serious 90s session, I use the equipment the games I liked the most to play them on, for the proper experience.

The musician, Yuzo Koshiro, did amazing work in the game too, argubly his best work(Streets of Rage fans might disagree however).

Very underrated Vermillion, considering when it was released. It was expensive, as you will know, because it is a 5 MEGA MEMORY cartridge :) I've got it displayed in my games room.

there were 4 versions of revenge of shinobi apparently!

Because of copyright issues regarding certain boss characters (many of which were based on cultural icons) there were at least four versions of the game in Japan and North America, with the later two also appearing in Europe.

Software revision 1.00 (1989): Bosses clearly resembling Godzilla, Spider-Man, The Terminator and Batman are present. Both Spider-Man and Batman are actually fake representations of themselves conducted by someone able to morph into his shape when enough damage is inflicted.

Software revision 1.01 (1989): Batman is replaced by anime character Devilman. Godzilla, and Spider-Man remain unmodified, the latter still morphing into the bat-like creature when defeated. Enemy soldiers with flamethrowers are also changed to bald men with headbands away from their original likeness to Rambo (coincidentally exactly the same thing Sega did with their earlier game, Secret Command).

Software revision 1.02 (1990): The fake Spider-Man is now redesigned into the licensed character from Marvel Comics, acknowledged by a copyright notice (Sega already had the license to the character for another game they were developing at the time, The Amazing Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin). Since he is now the real Spider-Man, he doesn't morph into a bat-like shape and actually leaves the battle when enough damage is inflicted, with Devilman entering to replace him. Godzilla still remain intact.

Software revision 1.03 (1990): Godzilla is replaced by a skeletal dinosaur. Everything else remains intact from the previous revision, including the licensed use of Spider-Man. This version was used in the Genesis 6-Pak cartridge.

Software revision 1.04 (2009): Since the licensed use of the boss Spider-Man was for a limited period of time (the license is currently owned by Activision), the game was subsequently prevented from being re-released in recent years on compilations and digital download services. The 2009 release for the Virtual Console features a new specific software revision (1.04) that omits the Marvel copyright notice and replaces Spider-Man with a pink palette swap of the character that still behaves the same as the licensed Spider-Man.[2]

I never went for the Saturn, mainly due to the fact I was working to hard and would have had very little time to play on it.

The games you mentioned are supposed to be classics too, SF3 in particular.

I might pick one up now actually...

Due to it's lack of popularity compared to the Mighty Megadrive, I fear we won't see a collection, but a dreamcast collection has come out so you never know (it has jumped from Megadrive compilations to Dreamcast, so seemingly forgot about the Saturn)

What other game in history has been re-modified so severly as this? lol

I have the collection set with Revenge of Shinobi in, which I haven't played till the end(I still cannot beat the final boss, meaning I still haven't beat him in the Japanese version, the one I play the most), so hopefully this is another version I have, I'll try and figure out how to verify this version...

Oh that's right, there was the copyright issues with the bosses. No wonder!

I still have the first revision with all the bosses since it was this and Altered Beast that were the 2 games that came with my MegaDrive as a kid.

I remember The Terminator boss going green like the Hulk as well.

Ah yes, I remember him now!

He looked like the marines, who I believe were the minions on the level before you met him, I can't believe why they picked on this game so much.

THe Saturn was the best console imo, The games were truly excellent.

It was a shame the Saturn didn't do so well, but as a 2D game machine, it had so many good titles in that area compared to the PSOne. And at least the legacy of it's gamepad design continues on i.e. MadCatz FightPads.
