no it wont be fine, that bit gives it allot of its rigidity.

I know im type from one right now.

That said mine is quite abit higher than normal. if the desk top is lower down i might be alright.
Normal sized people hate sitting at my desk because they are typing at shoulder level.
 
I wouldn't remove it. Its essential to the structural frame, you can remove it if you want but you'll soon find it will wobble and break.

It's not rocket science.

Take it out if, it's wobbling too much then put it back in and find another desk.
