24" upgrade - gtx 260 to ???

planning for a new 24" monitor so think I should up my graphics card at the same time

I currently have a GTX 260 (216)
Core 2 E7500 at 3ghz
4GB 800mhz ram
500w psu
windows 7

this runs things fine at 1620 res but dont think it will like going up to 1920

want to be able to run 1920 res on games like
bad company 2
arma II
bf3

at decent settings

so gtx 460 / 5850 / 6850 /6870 / 6950?
would I notice much difference?

sort of prices £120 - 170 max
not worried about phyx or 3d or eyefinity

Well if you want to be running stuff like BF3, Arma II etc then I'd really try and get the best possible GPU you can afford, this is only £10 over your upper limit,

tempted by the 5850 though

are they cheap because of the 6850 coming along (even though the 6850 doesnt seem to be any faster really)

i think the HD5850 is slightly better than a 6850 for most things. AMD did not continue the numbers as a direct upgrade from what i remember. best thing is buy the best you can afford within your budget, as a 5850 might do what you want for the next 6-18months, but do you want to be shelling out more money if something awesome comes out before then and you regret not just spending a little bit more now.

Buy the screen first then see how it fares before spending on a new card.

Something like a 6870 looks to be roughly within your budget.

Also, another vote for the special offer 5850's. As mentioned, these are very good value.
