Cambridge v Oxford, boats out about 4.15pm, race about 5pm. On BBC now.

Interviewing SIR Matthew Pinsent and SIR Stephen Regrave. Honestly, as great are the achievements they got, I really do think knighthoods are wrong just because you won a few boat races. Surely the kind of people to get them should be intellectuals or pioneers in research, medicine, that sort of thing. Or am I wrong?

I'd say you're wrong, it's not just winning a few boat races. It's winning their events at the highest level over and over again, Sir Steve Redgrave won 5 Olympic gold medals in a row - this is an achievement that few athletes will ever manage, it's not just doing a bit of rowing, it's setting a standard of dominance over a period that few people could hope to match. Sir Matthew Pinsent managed 4 Olympic golds in a row which is also something few people will even get close to.

If you think that some other equally worthy people aren't getting rewarded sufficiently then I might be inclined to agree with you but I don't think that not rewarding sporting greatness is going to help that.

+1

I agree with everything you said, the amount of work time and effort put into not just rowing but sport in general at that level! Another example is Chris Hoy, he is crazy good and has spent his life in persuit of golds!

I usually go down to london and get merry with the rowers on the side of the bank, but this year i will have to be content with watching it on the tube!

COME ON CAMBRIDGE!!

Nice and easy:

I only caught the last 5 minutes or so but an impressively dominant performance by Oxford there. They just looked a whole lot more comfortable but maybe the pressure of being favourites got to Cambridge slightly.

I still don't get this tbh. It would be like there being a cup that man u and chelsea fight for every year, no other teams are allowed to play and they call it The Football Match and the BBC make a massive fuss about it and give it way more advertising than any other football match ever and make it seem like there are no better football teams anywhere. The Boat race should include all uni teams and be cup, or would it ruin the illusion of Oxford and Cambridge being the best at everything if the final ended up not including either?

Illusion? There is no illusion - we actually are the best at everything.

I was at the start-line near where the TV coverage was happening. Massively dissapointed to see Cambridge so comprehensively beaten :(. Still, it was a pretty good day out, and got to see Sir Steve giving interviews etc.
