Car tax without V5

I'm getting my car ready for sale and in the process realised I've lost my V5 (parents moved from the family home a few years ago and must've binned it by accident). I applied for another one last week but my car tax is due at the end of the month and from everything I can find online I can't buy a tax disc without the V5.

So what do I do? Declare it SORN until I receive it (which could be 4 to 6 weeks) or is there another way?

I'm going to say no simply because I've never heard of or seen that document before.

Never seen this before?

So SORN until it arrives is the only option? And if so, what's the definition of "keeping the vehicle off the road", as I only have on-street parking.

Edit: Errr, the DirectGov site states:

To declare SORN, known as Statutory Off Road Notification, you are going to need the reminder, known as the Vehicle Licence Application/SORN Declaration , also known as the V11, or the Registration Document/Certificate also known as the Logbook.

So what on earth do I do?

On street parking is not going to satisfy the criteria of SORN (Statutory OFF Road Notification)

You need to apply for a new V5C at your correct address. I think it's about £19. Until that arrives you can't really do very much.
