I've had my new pc for a bit now and I thought I could use the on-board sound no problem, but I can't help feel that it might not be at 100%, e.g. when its on full it's not as loud as on-board I have preivously used.

My mobo is a gigabyte P67A-GD55, I was confident that on-board had come far enough for this not to happen.

Also I got myself some speakers at the weekend, just cheap creative ones, and a sound card to go with them, its quite clear that everything sounds much better when plugged into the sound card and not the on board audio.

Im not sure if it could be something I might have over-looked, any thoughts or does on-board just suck balls?

Onboard sound is much better than it used to be, but still no match for a dedicated sound card.

It depends how much sound quality matters to you wether thats a problem. Loads of people are happy with onboard, but personally I always use a sound card.

the model number is wrong for a Gigabyte or you have an MSI board, think they may have the Realtek ALC892 which I have on mine and is working great and the quality is good. All I can think is that the system volume is not up all the way levels wise in the playback properties of the os.

Onboard audio hasn't been like you describe for years mate.

lol yea my bad its an msi board, not sure why I said gigabyte!

I had an asus maximus formula mobo with my old q6600 and its sound output was much better than this, strange because i think they were both realtek HD audio software.

You have been spoilt my friend lol, I had a Rampage Formula motherboard and it had the same audio card as you in that board, namely SupremeFX II, which had the ADI 1988B chipset in it. That is hardly what I call onboard sound!!!

Really miss that myself, but tbh my onboard is still very good and the difference is not that great for me as my speakers go to 11;)

What I also did with my current rig is go into the realtek software and turn the graphic equaliser on, then raise all bars up to max or where you want them and then try it.
