Putting together a hot gaming rig. Is it that good?

Nice speakers and case.

The X58 chipset boards (s1366) can only support the older i7 900 series (nahalem) CPUs. The newer, faster CPUs are i5 and i7 2000 series (Sandy Bridge) and use P67 and H67 boards (s1155). If you are buying a gaming PC today, I strongly suggest you go for a Sandy Bridget CPU/motherboard - and the best value CPU for gaming is the quad core, overclockable i5 2500K. This chart shows how it compares to the i7 920.

As for overclocking - the 920 (D0 stepping) reliably overclocks to ~4GHz, while the i5 2500K usually hits 4.5GHz.

This is a good quality P67 board, that does 2 way SLI and CrossfireX.

To quote myself from your other thread
ou can't use three monitors with NV unless you have 2 cards. SORRY!
As for the case, i would get the Antec 1200 for more space and stuff.
i7 2600K or i5 2500K. Don't bother with the old gen
PSU, go for a well known brand. I reccomend Silverstone. If you go for the Antec 1200, then get the Antec CP1000 PSU. Personally, it's between Antec, Silverstone and Corsair for me.

EDIT: no offence, but i think you may need a bit more research. Just lurk around the forums for 2 weeks and take in everything you need. Ask as many questions as you need to.
If you **** up first time round then it'll be hard to correct later.

Almost feel for i2500k but reviews say i2600k is way better.

Thanks for letting me know that P67 is way to go. So now on quest to get great p67 just like cpu.

Will get the Antec 1200, then upon recommendation.

Big thanks for all being patient i've not been in desktop world for over 5 years. Am still on my old xps 1710 with 9750 gtx (which barely runs BF2BC2!)

Have you sorted the three monitor issue with NV cards?
Maybe get a 5870?
Which PSU are you going for?

The i7 2600K is a lot better than the 2500K - but only in applications that make full use of hyperthreading (games don't). In games - this is how they stack up.

Also, the 2600K has a slightly higher stock multiplier - so its clockspeed in the tests is bit higher. However, both of these CPUs have unlocked multipliers and overclock to about the same level - so if you overclock then the performance difference is even smaller.

If you are mainly using the system for gaming then I strongly suggest you go for the i5 2500K - and use the money saved to buy a better graphics card. This will improve your performance in games much more than going for the 2600K CPU.

480 is a pretty good card

Unfortuantely it doesn't, it only accepts the 1st generation core i7 CPUs (three digit model numbers), the newer and (generally)faster second gen core CPUs (four digit model numbers) require new s1155 boards to work.

IF that is the case then why Strife212 is running:

Core i7 960 | Asus Sabertooth X58 | GTX 480 x2 SLi | 6GB XMS DDR3

BTW just found what I was looking for:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-174-OE&tool=3

but would pop in 240 ssd and 480soc. What you guys think?

For the first part, I suggest you have a read of this review. Its an in depth review of the key s1155 (sandy bridge) CPUs - namely the i5 2500K and i7 2600K.

That system you linked to is a good one - if you don't want to build it yourself.

If you are going for a 240GB SSD, I'd suggest you go for one like the Vertex 3 - these are really quite a bit faster than the competition. Here is a review.

Does anyone else feel that it would be a really bad idea for the OP to build a pc? I mean a hot gaming rig...

Seriously I'm guessing you're a kid and you really are going too fast. You need to learn some of the basics first and lurk about the forums otherwise this is just going to go hideously wrong.

Furthermore considering it's a kid I would be willing to bet he doesn't have that money to spend and is wasting your time.
