Hi I'm going to Paris tomorrow for 2 nights with a friend.

Can someone tell me which area I should stay in? Or recommend a hotel?

I want to walk around and see some of the sights and go to a few bars in the evening.

Also what is worth seeing?

We stayed at the 'Mercure Paris Montmartre' hotel 3 weeks ago for 2 nights. Nice enough hotel and the rooms were clean. The breakfast was actually rather good for a chain hotel.

The hotel is on a main road, but our room on the 3rd floor was very quiet and we didn't hear the traffic at all. The hotel is also situated close to Gare du Nord station, so if you're arriving on the Eurostar it's quite convenient. The closet underground station is a 4-5 minute walk away.

I searched high and low, and the best price I got was through Expedia. If you're in a hurry, use Tripadvisor as they search multiple deal sites at once.

There is a great website that people use to rent out their apartments for short periods. Can't for the life of me remember it now..but there are plenty around.

Have a wander around Marais - the gay district - plenty of decent bars cafs and nightlife (unless you're really uptight and paranoid of being around gay people, like many on GD).

Wander around Montmatre as it's nice and relaxed with windy cobbled streets (windy as in meandering, not sure on the micro-climate!).

Go up to Sacre Coeur - touristy but very impressive.

Beware of cafes in obvious tourist spots, you'll end up paying 10 Euros for a coffee.

Go for some drinks around Belleville in the evening - fairly happening area that my French friend took us to last time I was over there.

Get a strip of 10 metro tickets at the start of your metro travels to keep you going and so you don't have to worry about getting more every time. They're reasonably priced.

Visit Musee D'Orsay, wander around the foot of the Eiffel Tower (probably be a shame to waste your short time hanging around waiting to go up it), go see the Arc de Triomphe.

Paris seems to be a city that polarises opinion but I really like it. Have a great time!

I'd avoid staying any place on Rue de la Pompe or Rue de Paradis, be especially careful if you get offered a taxi share from the aiport with a guy named Peter.......... :) (unless you have a relative called Bryan who is an ex CIA man...)

Steer clear of hotels near L'arc de Triomphe, unless you like to be kept awake to the early hours with cars honking their horns! We stayed in the Best Western Le Jardin de Cluny last time we were there. Short walking distance for some nice restaurnats at night, and easy access to the Metro.
