Idle temps are crazy high, something like 90 degrees. It's stable and runs and the stock heatsink is on fine with thermal paste as it all came but it's worrying. Ran 3D Mark 2011 and it crashed after about 45 seconds so obviously need to sort this.

Been looking at some of these watercooling kits, something like THIS. Never installed WC stuff before so is it simply a case of attaching to the CPU, unscrewing a fan and mounting the rad bit?

Or can anyone spec me an air cooler that should solve this problem? No OCing at the moment but he's mentioned he's gonna have a bit of spare money in a few weeks and may swap his brand new i5 2500 for a k model or better if the motherboard will take it.

What do you recon?

Its idling at 90C !?

Way too high.

I have a titan Fenrir on my 2500k and it idles at 29-30c.
I had to diy the bracket to fit my asus p8p67 board has the chipset heatsinks are a tad large.

What software are you using to measure the temps with? I used coretemp initially but it reported similar things to you, super high temps. I then switched to real temp and everything was fine. I don't think core temp has been sorted for sandy bridge yet, unless they've released a version since the one I used.

I used SpeedFan, will try realtemp when I get home, either way to guy wants to splash a bit more money on his £900 PC so is looking at about £50 to sort out the cooling, what do you guys suggest. One of those £50 watercooler things any good?

I remember thinking it was at about 80 in the BIOS during boot and that was worrying us.

If it was silent that would be even better.

I like my Titan Fenrir a lot. The stock fan with it is incredibly silent but I switched it for an Apache which is just as quiet and also took the temps down 2c which was nice.

What board has he got?

This is the build:

Intel Core i5 2500 3.30GHz
Asus P8H67-M Pro Intel H67
G.Skill RipJawsX 8GB
Asus ATI Radeon HD 6870 1024MB
Crucial RealSSD C300 64GB
Corsair TX 650W

He's already been talking about just ebaying the i5 and getting most his money back and throwing it down on an i7 2600k (providing his motherboard would take it).

the motherboard would take the i7 as they're all socket 1155. Don't know how h67 stands up to p67 on overclocking.

The titan fenrir looks like it'll fit on that board without DIY. Do some googling before hand to make sure :)

Grab a fenrir for £33 and an akasa apache for £15. Bish bash bosh £48

When you say you don't know how the h67 standas up to the p67 on overclocking what do you mean?

Is the i7 2600k the best CPU he could put onto that motherboard?

Will look into the titan fenrir.

Yes, the i7 2600k is the highest end Sandybridge cpu out at the moment.

I am referring to the overclocking capabilities of the h67 chipset motherboard compared to the p67. The h67 is a trimmed down version of the p67, mainly for users not intending to use all the features of the p67

Ah right, sorta makes sense. It should still overclock slightly though?

Just looking at the titan fenrir and it's a motherboard out job which seems like a lot of agro (unless it's okay to do with the motherboard is situ and with the otherside of the case off?). Any other coolers that do the same job without having to mess about with taking the motherboard out?

Most after market coolers will require you to remove the motherboard I'm afraid if you don't have a cutout on the back of the motherboard tray. I get 28c on idle and 53c on prime95, 57c on Intel Burn Test with a Noctua NH-D14. I had a Xigmatek Dark Knight fitted and it was about 5c higher just. Am selling it in the market on this forum just now :)

No point looking for other CPUs or even coolers without working out the temp issue. It's not the CPUs fault. The CPU cooler contact is most likely IMO. Is it set correctly, was the thermal paste applied correctly, is the cooler fan connected and spinning etc?

Appreciate the offer, he's minted though and would rather spend double and get it new than second hand. Silly to you and me but just how he can afford to work.

It's on the stock Intel cooler with the stock thermal paste. It is sat correctly, the fan speed never goes above about 1200rpm I noticed which seems weird to me?

He's only looking at a new CPU as he's got money to burn at the moment and wants the best. Getting me to pop an i7 and new cooler in at the same time makes sense to him especially as he should get near enough retail back for his i5 as it's been used for less than a week so far (total useage maybe 3-5hours).

Anyone know of a cooler that will 100% work with his i5, an i7 and his motherboard without modding? Accepting that the motherboard will have to come out.

No problem It was only used for a few weeks so is still as new but I can understand his thinking. It is high enough to clear ram etc and narrow enough to not cause any problems on anything else and has good temps but OcUK don't sell them and not sure about any others tbh.

I tgink either voltage is too high or cooler isnt seated correctly. No way would you be hitting 90c under normal circumstances even wih aa stock cooler.

Noctua NH-U9B SE2 Dual Fan Quiet CPU Cooler

Noctua NH-U12P SE2 Dual Fan Quiet CPU Cooler

Noctua NH-D14 Dual Radiator CPU Cooler although this one " Possible compatibility issues with video cards that have large protruding components at the back"

All listed as compatible on Noctuas website

And imo you can't get better air cooling and they are very easy to fit.

Agreed I had stock cooler for 1st day and my max temp on IBT was 81c and idle 38c

The CPU was retail from OcUK, can't see how anything like the voltage would have been messed up.

Think I'll look at getting the second one then as long as it's fine with the motherboard and G.Skill RipJaw RAM.
