Lots of Kleenex comes in handy.
I have set them up with a bunch of friends at my house before, great fun!
Invite a load of like-minded friends over for the night and tell them to bring their PC's. Set them all on LAN with a decent computer as the server.. Few beers later and the night disappears into a nerdy blur.

There is a big LAN gathering at the end of April. I so want to go!
Last year it was sold out right away and had something like 5100 participants
Wouldn't like the electric bill after that!

OP forget the haterz lan parties are very cool, Deathmatch is so much more exciting when the guy you just fragged 5 times in a row is sat next to you
