Moving to Toronto (Canada)

As far as i know you just need to secure a job and then its a simple process?

That surely cant just be for the 1 years working Visa can it?

To be fair i've only had visa dealings with the UK and US but i wouldn't say any working visa application is ever simple, some have tighter requirements than others but in general they all involve a lot of careful planning and paperwork.

Plus are you telling potential employers that you are only planning to get a 1 year visa? if i was a manager i wouldn't hire someone on that basis even if you did state that your intention was to extend the stay, there are too many risks involved. You may be getting interview offers under the understanding that you'll have a visa but don't assume that will turn into a job offer.

Obviously, you'll pretty much be guarenteed with family over there - but it will take time.

Not necessarily, he only mentioned uncle and aunt which i don't think applies, it has to be an ancestral link, either parents or grandparents generally.

No he's talking permanent. Bunac make it easy if you only want to go for a year.

IT is no longer on the accepted skills list.

Three years ago, yes. Now, no. Same with teachers.

OP: You appear to have a very naive/romanticised view of how easy emigrating outside the EU is, especially to places like Canada and the US. At this stage, I'd be tempted to say that the ONLY hope you have is marrying the missus and claiming a spousal visa.

A friend of mine moved to Toronto a few years ago, his wife is Canadian. Be aware that living somewhere is VERY different to going on holiday there. He works in IT (looking after middleware platforms) and the job/life balance over there is ridiculous. Most commutes are fairly long and the amount of holiday you get is miniscule, you even have a limited amount of sick days.

He'd move back here in a flash but a. his wife doesn't want to because of her mum there and b. they can't afford to move back here now anyway!

Having been an ex-pat myself for 5 years I'd warn you that the grass is always greener on the other side.

EDIT: Oh and one other thing, never listen to anything a current or planned ex-pat tells you. no one likes to admit they've made a mistake. ;)

You say you have relatives out there..... if you have a parent from there then you won't have any problems! All the info here

Interesting topic though. Would be interested to know what the job situation is out there myself but you don't get a proper view from job agencies to be honest.

You could marry your gf:p

This.

Unfortunately your easiest and most simple route (although not always quicker) will be marriage. Its surprising how much more uncomplicated it makes things. A friend of mine has been with his US based GF for a couple of years, however he wasnt applicable for any type of Visa. She he and his misses decided to get married now, but just a Registry affair, and not tell anyone within the families, on the agreement that in a couple of years, when they are read
to to do marriage properly, he will propose and they will announce it to everyone. Within 6 months, he has now made the move over.

Kinda sucks that it brought them to this, but Im confident they will be together if not forever, so for them, it works. Without it, there isnt a chance he would have been able to move over, so who knows how it could have ended otherwise.

So yes, moral of the story.....just marry the girl :P

Thanks for the input guys

It's a shame to what you have to do just to get into another country to be with someone.

I understand now how much this country screwed up but letting anyone in, looks like ill marry her then lol.

Go for it m8, if it doesn't work out, well at least you tried and you won't be sat at home in 10 years time wondering what would have happened if you took a chance and moved to Canada.

Yes, somethings are not as good as in the UK, But unless you give it a go, you'll not know. You may hate the canadian way of life, or you may love it.

We dont let 'anyone' in.

You you can enter Canada illlegaly as well if you choose.

Problem is when they catch them, Britain unlike other countries, doesnt deport them, they just release them and ask them to turn up at an immigration center. And we know how effective that is :D

Hope you like immigrants, homeless people, ridiculously over-priced housing and buying milk in plastic bags.

Oh look whos turned up lol....sure Canada has immigrants just like most countries of the world do;)....homeless people??...yep most countries including the UK, Canada and America have them....ridiculously over priced housing??...that may very well be the case but the houses there are bigger compared to what you get here;)....milk in plastic bags??...wow whooopeee doo dah....is that the best you can come up with??

Ill tell u what the deal breaker is in Canada, the brutally cold winters but u wont find many people there moaning about it as they just get on with their daily lives and still manage to be happy...personally in my 20 odd yrs of living there, it never bothered me the winters.
