I'm buying a new graphics card very soon and was hoping for the gtx 590. I know there's a lot of radeon fans on here, but I've always been nvidia and heard allsorts of story's about problems with games due to the drivers not being as good as nvidias. And the noise level of the 6990! But was wondering if a 590 would be much better than a 580 for me as I only use 1920 x 1080p.

GTx 580 should be good enough for everything at that resolution. You could always add a second GTX 580 if you ever need more power, and that will be quite a bit faster than a 590.

Well, I wouldn't go 590gtx at all because frankly, too many issues, too many potentially awful flaws(we should know in a few weeks tops if its REALLY awful or just, not great). 580gtx is a good card but, see I don't want to say sli/xfire is a waste at 1920x1080, its not, if you want high framerates, whatever you want to spend is fine. I remember only a 18 months ago people were fine with sli/xfire at 1920x1080, now its "its only for 30" screens or eyefinity" , rubbish. High performance is high performance, for huge screens or eyefinity it will likely be the difference between playable and not playable, some games will go from 20 to 40fps, workable or not playable in many games. However theres plenty of slowish games on great cards at 1920x1080 and there WILL be more, if you want uber performance, who cares.

The thing is though, I'd still not recommend the 580gtx either, go for the 570gtx, the 580gtx costs far more than the increase in performance you get. IE £255 for cheapest 570gtx, £380 for a 580gtx, thats 50% higher cost for a card thats, realistically 15% faster at best. Its just crap value, the 570gtx is one of the better priced Nvidia cards, if you were going for sli, it beats 590gtx, smashes it when both are overclocked, and costs a lot less, will run quieter, theres no downside basically.

560gtx sli is also a very good value setup, noticeably faster than a 580gtx, ok, its not as fast as 580gtx sli, but how much more performance than a single 580gtx do you want, 100% more, or 30%, 50%?

Basically the best value setups around are 6950's, 6950 xfire, and probably 560gtx/560gtx sli.

As for AMD< 6950's, more so the reference ones that almost every one unlocks into a full 6970 for the same price, are awesome, you could always try one, if you don't like it you'll have zero trouble selling it, and move to a 570gtx after.

Theres plenty of choices, the 6990 or the 590gtx are the two WORST possible choices right now, theres cheaper and faster, and quieter setups that all overclock further aswell.

If you go for a 580 you might aswell pay £170 for essentialy another 580. Id say the 590 is the way to go if you have the money

I think as DM and crYsis mentioned, wait and see what happens with the 590 before splashing out this sort of money.
Jason, it wasn't in your options but as DM has pointed out 6950xfire is a very good product for the price.
IMO don't but a 590 until there is some sort of definate fix, or the water has settled and things begin to look a bit better for it.

The 590 has seen lots of reports of failure with resistors blowing, both in the press and also from members of this forum, I would avoid one until it is clear Nvidia has resolved this issue.

I also also avoid the 590 for the time being, all the latest Nvdia 560/570/580 perform very well in all modern games, as do the AMD cards.

If it was me I'd get the GTX570 now or even a 560, wait for the 28nm Kepler later this year and see how that performs.

If your even considering the 590, surely right now the best option is 2 * 480SE in SLi for £400:
Don't forget the 1000w+ psu to power them!

As dual card setups go, at the moment you can get xfire 6950's for £360(I don't know if this one unlocks):
HIS ATI Radeon 6950 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card @ £179.99 inc VAT

That's £360 for 6950 xfire:eek: and more than likely won't need a new psu if you have a good 600W one.

Alone, the 590 doesn't seem a bargain - however, when you consider it's 2x 580 under the hood, then it's a great bargain. Overclocked its SLI 580 performance for over £250 off the price. (note: prone to self imploding when overclocked)

It all depends if you actually need that much horsepower.

I'm not a fan of dual GPU cards to be honest. Always issues with them and not all games support them properly anyway. GTX580 every time for me.

I don't think the 590 is 2x580's is it? Thought both GPU's were seriously downclocked and it was more like 2x570's?

performance-wise it's two 570s but it's actually two 580s.

the 6990 is going for 499 on OCUK last i checked, but hte OP doesnt like ATI

Thanks for you replys guys, il research into the performance of these other options. The last dual card I bought 2years ago "gtx295" is still an ace card now. That got a lot of bad reports but I can still max anything. Just no dx11.

Might be two 560's with the latest drivers due to down-clocking. Also the new bios due for the 590 soon, will likely reduce performance further.

To answer the below question.

"Is gtx 590 worth the extra money over gtx580?"

If the 590 cost the same as the 580, I would still choose the 580 and clock it.
