So why should I jailbreak my iPhone?

I've had an iPhone for the past 3 yrs (currently a 3GS) and have enjoyed the simplicity of the OS and the security that apps can't talk to each other.

I'd like to know what the main reasons for jailbreaking are? And what are the cons (eg. slower OS, lower battery life, security, things like that).

I'm currently on iOS 4.2.1 (ie. the one before the latest one). Any links to simply jailbreaking guides would be appreciated.

I'm in the same situation, and unless there's a JB feature that you are desperate for, I think it's more hassle than it's worth myself. :)

there is nothing on JB i miss....

i would like to be able to switch 3g and wifi on and off on the home screen, and lock screen info would be nice too, but it doesn't make me want to go out and JB all the time....

happy as it is tbh...

I had mine JB for about a month before I broke it. I never bothered doing it to the replacement as I didn't miss anything other than lockinfo. I keep thinking about doing it again just for that as it was useful, especially being able to have my calendar stuff at a glance.

MyWi is great if you want to tether your laptop to your iPhone. It's quite expensive but worked out a lot cheaper than "upgrading" my standard tethering tariff to a special iPhone tethering tariff.

I really wanted the app that enables FaceTime over 3G by fooling the phone into thinking it's got a wifi connection.

Didnt work

I tried 1 or 2 more apps that didnt work either. Very frustrating experience. There are loads of apps like SBS settings that do work, but the free for all unchecked nature of Cydia by and large leads to disappointment.

I'm considering JB'ing my iPhone 4 at the minute. Rather interested in the usual lockscreen and SBS settings.

Edit: removed the youtube app discussion as I'm pretty sure it's illegal.

The only benefit i would get from jailbreaking would be to get tethering.
On the AT&T network, arent they detecting that the phone is jail broken and charing the customers for the tethering charge?
If this is true, what is the likelyhood that happening in the UK on say, O2?

Unlucky didn't realise simplicity tariff was exclused.

If O2 wanted to tell they probably can. Nobody knows if they are going to try like at&t however.

If there had to be a single reason to JB, it would have to be tethering.

It's ridiculous that Android phones such as the HTC Desire can setup WiFi hotspots on-the-fly with the silly restrictions the mobile networks can now place on iPhones.
