Thinking about buying a Sony Vaio F VPC-F12MOE with 8GB

Does anyone have one ? looking to buy for the wife

She will be using for Photoshop 9 and blu-ray

Yep, very good laptop love it.

However you maybe best picking up the 4gb model and replacing the ram yourself much cheaper.

Never used it for photo shop but it does the likes of mafia 2 and crysis in mid settings, can't say I have found a game which it won't play anyway! So I am assuming it is a fairly decent gfx card.

If one of the main uses will be photoshop get the premium version with a matt screen which displays the full RGB range of colours. Don't use photoshop myself but it's what all the photoshoppers recommend.

As kg648 says it might be cheaper to get 4GB and upgrade yourself to 8GB, it's easy to do yourself.

A comman complaint is the fan noise which constantly changes speed and in between gets whiney. Over a year after release no one has been able to find a solution. If you're thinking of using the laptop to watch movies then headphones are a must to drown out the fan noise.

The keyboard is nice but not as good as the now discontinued 18.4" AW series which had a better layout.

The full HD res can also make text difficult to read at times. I've always had laptops with high screen resolutions but after using the AW for a year before the F, which I've been using for another year, the extra 2" makes a lot of difference. e.g. photoshop tools should be easier to use on the larger screen.

If you don't mind used you can pick up the AWs for cheap with the RGB screen and BD-R. It won't be as portable as the F but it's not that much bigger. The F also has 2 drive bays plus the optical.

I've had to remove the optical drive in mine to add a 2nd HDD + SSD.

I always use headphones to chillout :D , the viewing angle on my XPS 17 is terrible with texts

What speed are the hard drives 7200 ?

The viewing angles on this screen is the best I've seen and the matte display means almost no reflection. The glossy display on my previous Dell and VAIOs made using them at work difficult with the reflections from windows and office lighting. Don't have that problem anymore, even when watching dark scenes in movies.

Varies by model, my F11Z1E came with a 5,400 rpm 500GB HDD.

I've just got myself a VPCF13Z1E.

Not the prettiest laptop I've ever used, but it certainly flies. The screen is great, but text is seriously small. I'm even considering running it at a lower resolution.

Another bonus is that it fits in a Pakuma K3L bag. I didn't fancy the larger K1 bag.
