Hi my longstanding Asus 8800gtx has finaly died
i,m looking for a replacement what card nowadays is equal or slightly better
in performance?
thanks

Time to try the oven trick? :D

Replacement card wise, I would say a 2nd hand 4850, 9800GTX+(GTS250), GTX260 216, 4870....these should be between price range of £40-£60.

But if you want a capable new card with warranty, the 5830 on pre-order at £85.99 is worth considering, if you can't push the budget to the 5850 at £107.99 that is.

Bake it

Take it apart keep the ram pads safe as they are re needed clean off the TIM then turn oven on 200c then put card in woth 4 screws holding it OFF the tray through the holes that the screws came out of then let it bake for ten mins then turn oven OFF and leave the door open and let the card cool B4 u move it. About half hour will do then re apply new Thermal paste (non conductive TIM is best but AC5 will do ) then reinstall and play some more games

Has worlked for me MANY MANY times

Good luck

oven trick sounds fun!
the card still boots to windows..but once in theres lots of red/green dashes everywhere
could that be the memory on the card? will the oven trick still work ?
also the card is only for general office work .........and a few games when bored so it dont really need to be high end

I believe lot of people fixed the artifact (the red/green dashes everywhere as you call it) with the baking method. But if that fails, I think basing on what you using the card for you would be better off trying to get a 2nd hand 8800GT or 9800GT 512MB for around £35-£40. Yes it would be slightly slower than the 8800GTX, but should be more than enough for what you need it to do, plus it's lower power consumption than the 8800GTX.

Go for it if anything it is fun to do
and very rewarding WHEN it works and i have fixed many this way including dell xps 7900 series graphics cards

Bake it !!! It really works!

I have a 4870 and started getting green dots in a grid pattern on the screen. Removed heatsink baked it in the oven 10min at 190c. Let it cool for 30min replaced heatsink etc.

Runs fine now although I dont overclock it anymore but better than the 8800gt spear i was using.

I am looking to get a new card but the choice is crazy for £200-250!! :(

IT LIVES ON!!!:D:D:D

card booted with no problem at all currently running @48c on the desktp

for how long who knows but it was worth it
