New router or homeplugs?

Hi

I have the basic 54mbs netgear router that comes with our Virgin package. I'm pretty sure we got the 20mb package.

However, when I play games my ping will go to 300+ if somone else on the network is on youtube or a fancy flash game etc. Some people have told me about something call QoS? As far as I'm aware it limits certain bandwidth to certain users.

Is there a good router which will have firmware able to do this? Or will homeplugs solve the issue? I've personally not really had a problem with wireless, dont have many drops etc - only problem is if somone else goes on youtube etc.

Budget of about £100 tops but anything under is a bonus!

Any help appriciated, thanks!

Anyone know if I can get QoS on this router? Did a google, but results didn't look too promising.

QoS probably wont help tbh. Are you both using wireless? Its a pretty simple router with no MIMO etc. Try connecting first with an ethernet cable before considering QoS. It sounds like the wireless just cannot handle 2 bandwidth intensive apps.

Hmm, can't really use a wire as its too far away and I don't have one long enough anyway. Would ringing Virgin up and explaining the problem help of any sort?

Na VM customer service is shocking. Can you not connect the other computer by wire just briefly to see if it still affects your ping.

Hmm, we do have a computer downstairs which never gets used which is wired. I'll start streaming on that while playing. Will it matter that my computer will still be wireless?

No it shouldn't matter that you are wireless, if the computer that is wired can stream while you game without effecting your play significantly then that points to an issue with wireless bandwidth with multiple users conected in which case homeplugs will help. If the wired computer streaming messes up your game then QoS is what you need.

more people on wireless = less throughput and higher latency for every user on wireless, and its not like its a 50/50% split, it just degrades badly :(
