***Official Shogun Total War 2 Thread***

The only thing boring in this game are the naval battles. If anything I find them more boring than those of empire - at least in empire things went boom :p

But they took forever!! Could die of boredom before you got a shot off! :p

RE: Mods. I've never really had a problem with the balance of TW games. I tend to only use them when I'm done with the vanilla version, as it can re-energize the game. Darth-mod generally very configurable. Can remove the aspects that don't bother me (ie changes to unit speed and arrow trails). I would wait until it stable before using it though.

But a mod to get rid of realm divide very tempting!

I quite like the small naval actions. I only have a fairly crude fleet so far consisting of bow kobayas and sengoku bunes but their polarised abilities forces you to be strong on tactics and I like the micro management.

By the way, for non ETW veterans: select a unit on the battlefield and hit the Insert key. You can then mouse scroll through you rank and file's POV.

ETW bored the hell out of me!

Also I like the naval combat much more in this game. In ETW it was just about lining up your ships correctly. There's more strategy in this with the boats having different numbers of archers and infantry.

Anyways, about to hit Kyoto :D I specially brought my Daimyo out of retirement for this event (I let him settle down for quite a few years after taking the Chosokabe island).

Stupidly, the AI sallied out to fight me rather than wait for me to attack the castle. So this is gonna be pretty easy sadly.

Shogun 2 Total War Mods

As you know, some of us prefer to mod the game to improve some of the weaker aspects of it.

I will list mods that I found to make Shogun 2 more enjoyable to play.

1) DarthMod - improves AI, changes speed of the units, fixes diplomacy, doubles unit sizes (e.g. Yari Ashigaru are now 300 ), gets rid of AI cheating like spawning units, fixes castle defence, removes projectile trails and Horo's, etc.

I suggest that you play the vanilla game beforehand to make sure that you want to rebalance it - DarthMod will definitely change the feel to the game and make it more old school Total War-like.

2) Better Unit Cards - changes unit cards and colours so that you can distiguish between different types of units instantly. Doesn't break the game at all and certainly helps the look of it.

3) Japanese Speech Fix Mod - changes some of the commands in Japanese that were totally misfit for the purpose and make them sound realistic (uses in-game sounds). Certainly recommended for anyone who knows Japanese or doesn't want to learn gibberish by playing the game.

4) Shogun 2 Music Mod - "This mod changes some of the music in the campaign, custom and Historical battle maps". Nothing more to add IMO, you might or might not like it.

5) Larger Spawned Garrisons - if you're worried about clans being destroyed in the first turn or find the AI to lack the will of defending their realms, check out this mod, it greatly improves the garrison sizes in the castles.

Not compatible with DarthMod afaik (that one changes these settings in its own way).

6) Extended Campaign Victory Conditions - if you like the game to last longer. Not sure if compatible with other mods.

7) Shogun 2 Realism - mod aiming to increase accuracy of the game. Not compatible with other overhauls such as DarthMod.

8) Shogun 2: All-In-One Mod - compilation of the best (according to the creator) of to date Shogun 2 mods - all compatible with each other. Includes DarthMod.

9) Realm Divide Mod - early version of the mod that changes Realm Divide behaviour in game. May save a lot of frustration to less experienced players.

9a) Double Clan Fame for Realm Divide - delays Realm Divide event.

10) Double Unit Size - exactly what it says, doubles unit sizes. I think Darth Mod uses it.

11) Clan Color Mod - makes clan colours look more realistic - e.g. not overly bright or cheerful.

There's plenty of others, I'll edit the post when I have some spare time.

I'm using Darth Mod, Clan Color and Better Unit Cards mods atm.

Thanks for that list Mr Krugga, I think I'm ready to try some mods out now. Although I will say the stock game has been quite fun so far, moreso than previous TW games imo (realm divide can be a pain in the backside though lol). I like the more focused gameplay. Empire felt too 'big' (apart from the obvious) if you know what I mean. Made things a bit too unwieldy, even with mods. I like to start small and work up, with not a lot going on between the factions initially. With most of the clans being that way it's just about right for my play style.

Have any of the Mods had reports of creating issues for online play? Such as multiplayer campaign etc?

(Not that I've tried that yet lol, just don't want to try and find it's borked :P)

Anyone else finding that their cool melee units (monks etc) are barely getting used? I'm pretty much at war with everyone in a big mash up around Kyoto and am having full stacks beat the hell out of each other; mainly with bowmen.

I'm finding the most boring but effective way of winning fights is to field 9 or 10 units of bow samurai with a couple of Yari for throwing against their cavalry charges. The archers just hammer the opposition as they charge and then hammer the few stacks of enemy archers after that.

The archers reduce morale really quickly - you can't go too wrong with half your army made up of archers. Tbh, I am not finding much use for anything other than the cheapest units.

the new beta nvidia drivers fixed the campaign map stutter while scrolling
my biggest gripe with the game

i can finally start to enjoy it now :D

I'm pretty new to Total War and was wondering something. Since i'm pretty crap at battles I often just do auto-resolve but i have no idea if thats better or worse than doing the battles yourself (assuming you're good at it, which i am not).

Basically, if i got good at doing the battles myself would i suffer fewer losses in any given battle over auto-resolve?

Thanks

I have only just noticed that wherever you fight on the map, it really puts you into that location rather than a predetermined battlefield. Very cool.

I've actually found the opposite, or it only very very loosely resembles the location if at all. With the naval battles, even if I'm fighting a battle touching the land, I get a big open sea with no land in sight.

You should only really auto-resolve battles against armies smaller than yourself, and ones that dont pose a threat (for example an army made up of 12 units, mostly being ashigaru). However you will do much better in more evenly matched battles if you learn to fight them yourself.

Yep, pretty much my finding.

Generally if you really outnumber the enemy and fight it manually you will loose some units. If you use auto resolve there is a good chance you will loose no units at all and you will kill more of their units than manually.

However if the opposition is a similar size or larger you really need to do it yourself and it aint too hard to do much better than autoresolve
