Hi all

I posted a thread at the begining of the month regarding my build to be, it looked something like this:

"I have finally decided to build a new system, just wanted to know your opinions on it. Also I have not included a PSU as I already have a bequite darkpower 650w which I assume should be fine with this set up.

EVGA GeForce GTX 570 1280MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £299.99

Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £263.99

Asus P8P67 PRO Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard - (Sandybridge) ** B3 REVISION ** £149.99

Fractal Design Define R3 Midi Tower Case - Titanium Grey £84.98

Corsair Vengeance 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit ***OcUK Exclusive*** £62.39

Gelid Tranquillo CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/AM2+/AM3/LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366) £26.53

Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103SJ) £39.98 (£33.32)

Total £940"

Right now I have been paid and will be ordering in the morning, but I will change a few components:

1)
After reading much about the Asus P67 mobo I decided not to buy and instead go for either a Gigabyte UD4 or a MSI GD65, at the moment im leaning towards the MSI....Any recommendations>???

2)
decided to change the Gfx to the MSI GTX 560 ti twin frozr

3)
I am now not too sure about the initial cpu cooler also and will go with the bequiet dark rock advanced, as it seems to get excellent reviews. ( has anyone used this on, on either boards, does it clash with memory?)

4)
memory, although is ok, I might spend the extra £10-15 and get the Crucial ballistix smart tracer 4GB

Any input is appreciated as will order 2moro ;) ;)
cant wait!!
Thanks in advance

+1 for the GD65 MSI board, I have recently used it in a new rig and I found it very easy to work with. The bios is awesome alos as you can use a USB mouse to make the selections

Hi there,

1) I would go for the gigabyte. Nice old style bios, loads of features.

2) Fair enough, cheaper, slower card - but better bang-for-buck. You may aslo want to have a look at the AMD HD 6950 2GB. Its a good card and there is a fair chance you can unlock it to a 6970.

3) Really nice CPU cooler - go for it :)

4) Not really worth it tbh. In fact I would get this kit - its almost just as fast and is much cheaper and low profile (so it doesn't interfere with the CPU cooler).

Also, if you are mainly gaming then I would strongly suggest you go for the i5 2500K. Its much cheaper, overclocks just as well and is just as fast as the 2600K in games. However, if you are using applications that make good use of hyperthreading, then the 2600K is a very good choice.

thanks for your reply Cmndr Andi.

so you could recommend the Ud4 over the MSI? any particular reason, as I mentioned that so far I am leaning towards the Msi due to the fact that I have not read many things that go wrong with it, also I am attracted to the military class spec with ferrite chokes etc..... would be interesting to hear your feedback

the reason i chose the ballistix (ok dumb reason) is the fact that you can see the leds on them and are customisable (change of colour) which straight away reminds me that I forgot to mention that I was also looking for a decent Case with a window! any recommendations, as the R3 initially chosen does not have one!
the 2600K I think will be most appropriate I do video editing and photo editing and thought that this model would be best.

Thanks again for your input and will await your response.

thanks for your response wildman, what cooler are you using with cpu please?

running a corsair H50

my 2500k @ 4.2 on 1.215 volts runs around 50 at full load

4.5 on 1.215 volts running prime. CPU is running very 50's under load

To be honest I can't really notice any significant noise from the H50. I have got a total of 4 fans in my case, 2x 140mm exhaust, 1 x 140mm intake and the 120mm rad fan for the H50. If I am being honest I think its the quietest machine I have ever had. Even the HSF combo on the 6870 seems relatively quiet

Many thanks for that I like the CM690 very much actually, however, i have browsed the OCUK site with no option of buying a side window. can you link to the window part please...many thanks

Olivier

dont worry about my last post have found some panels on the net, however, I just read a couple of reviews and it seems that only the front is covered by dust filters ;(
so will have to re evaluate my options.
let me know if you know of a good case as described above but with dust filters all round. I would have bought the 690 straight away had it had dust filters all round.
thanks again

You can always get the window direct form the manufacture CM if you are set on a window. The CM690 is agood case. Build quality is excellent and it has pelnty of space inside to work with. The cable management options are good, and the tool less bays are very handy. The advanced one comes with 3 fans and has an eSATA docking port on top

Great case, the eSata port is so useful, for me anyway as i have a few external hard drives.

If you google around you can find a full window sidepanel for thhe cm 690 series, but it also has fan grill cut out of the acrylic which ruins it a bit if you aren't going to be using a fan.

You could always make your own window if that interests you.
