Looking at something like a Bora but not sure to go for a 1.9 TDi or a 2.0 Sport

Just used for getting to work mainly and the 15 mile cruise to parents place once a week. Perhaps 1 or 2 trips down to the coast or Bath every now and then.

Get a petrol.

Petrol cars will be cheaper to buy and you wont do enough miles to warrant the premium for a diesel.

The consensus seems to be that unless you do more than about 15,000 miles a year then a diesel's high purchase cost and costly repairs isn't justified by lowered fuel bills.

Isn't a Bora just a golf underneath? Have you thought about a Golf or maybe a Focus.

2.0 Petrol in the mk4 Golf / Bora isn't the best of engines. Thirsty, not particularly powerful and some have an oil drink problem.

It sounds like your mileage won't be high enough for the diesel so the 1.6 or 1.8 petrol sound like they would fit the bill.

Petrol, who needs the smelly hand in the petrol station :)

You can get pretty good economy from the 1.6 FSI engine in the mark V golf - I get 45 - 50mpg on my commutes (split 33/66 urban/motorway). Not the most exciting drive admittedly, but it depends what you're after I guess.

I'm buying a 1.9 TDI Golf this weekend :( Don't do it unless you have to! Rattly smelly lump of crap!
