Hi, I'm on a leave of absence from Uni and need some money to pay rent on my house in York. I've dumbed down my CV a lot and not mentioned my CompSci degree or the MSc I'm applying for. I've also omitted the skills I've learnt at Uni as I can't see software engineering or embedded systems design helping much while pulling pints and I thought it might be intimidating for the interviewer.

I'm just looking for some generic skills to put in the 'blah blah' part of the profile but my mind is blank, what skills do you need to serve drinks?

I can programme in C(++), Java, Real-time Java, Ada95, Haskell, Alloy (verification language), CSP (concurrent programming verification language) Z80 Assembler, Handel-C and VHDL. I also have experience with FPGA programming/prototyping and all the electronic design you would ever need for an electronics undergraduate degree as well as UML and OCL modelling.
I'm the best solderer I know (thanks to having a job in it once upon a time) and have even plumbed for a living - I could be a certified lagger easily if I paid for the qualification!

But none of these skills seem transferrable to a bar job. Help me out guys? :(

Just pop in to all the pubs and have a chat with the manager/owner...

There are only 3 bar jobs listed on the job centres website for the lancaster/morecambe area, it really is a **** and deprived area here so going around all the pubs individually is a bit futile. :(

Try not to press too heavily on the qualifications.. It may indicate youre only after this as a 'filler' job until something more suited comes along.

As previously said, I would have thought a chat with the manager at a bar would be more suitable than a formal CV but thats not my call to make.

Best of luck

Don't discount the possibility of a part time software job. I know a few people who did a few hours of contracting for web(Boring I know) and iphone work for small companies when studying their masters.

From someone who reads though thousands (literally) of CVs, most for bar work, you did the right thing in omitting completely unrelated skills (no matter how impressive they are in the real world)

Thanks for your input guys, I've changed the profile bit to

I’m enthusiastic, comfortable working under pressure and have excellent timekeeping. I’m used to serving customers in a friendly, professional manner, have good mental maths and cash handling abilities and I’m quick to learn any new skills my job requires. In my spare time I’m a keen guitar player and enjoy skydiving, for which I’m currently working towards my Cat-A license by accelerated freefall.

and have reworded the SES Prism job.

Well go to those 3 first, if you get a job then great. If not carry on to others. Start with the busy ones.

You're not going to get a bar job by emailing off a CV, it's not going to happen. I might be wrong though, it's not happened yet but will one day I'm sure. ;)

agreed, I've done my share of bar work and really they aren't interested in CVs - they'll want someone that's got a bit of till experience who can get along with the rest of the staff and the locals. If its an older pub you'll need to be able to remember the prices pretty quickly but most modern ones will have everything in the till.

The other thing you can do to help your chances is be ultra flexible with your availability, or be happy to work Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday day :)

Well I've emailed off my Cv anyway, I'm hoping I'll get a interview with one of them. I did say in the email that I am flexible with hours and I'm available to start immediately so maybe they'll get in touch...

All I want is some money to pay my rent and to finish my skydiving training, not a lot to ask seeing as I'm not entitled to state benefits and actually want to work.

If you want a bar job in York (where I live) I would honestly suggest weatherspoons for a easy win failing that.

If you have a car ,split York into four on google maps and drive to each pub at a non busy time and ask for the manager hand your CV over strike up a conversation with him/her would be surprised if you didn't have a job within the week.

This worked for me several times in my travelling days .

Infact hit up the windmill pub on hull road near dunnington ask for john or Jill they are always on the look out for bar staff be warned though busy busy pub hope this helps
