New PC (big budget)

The guy I've built a PC for recently is gonna sell all the parts and just go all out this time, not cutting corners etc...

This is his current (9day old) PC:

i5 2500 (non k)
Asus ATI Radeon HD 6870 1024MB
Crucial RealSSD C300 64GB
Samsung F3 2TB
G.Skill RipJawsX 8GB
Asus P8H67-M Pro Intel H67
Corsair TX 650W
Samsung SH-S223C DVD+-RW

I'm thinking the DVD Drive can be re-used (unless Blu-Ray drives/writers are worth getting?, still needs to do DVD's fast though) and the 8GB of RAM maybe (unless you can get better), the Samsung F3 2TB will be reused as it's just his storage dump.

Budget is about £1500, no monitor, OS, keyboard, mouse, speakers etc are needed. If the best you can get is only gonna cost £1300 or £1400 then he's happy to underspend. However if the difference between a £1500 PC and a £1600 PC is some mega good new hardware or something he may stretch.

So £1500 for the following:

CPU, Motherboard, Graphics Card, SSD HDD (64GB wasn't big enough for him), PSU (unless the 650w is good enough?), Blu-Ray & DVD writer, Case (not flashy, can be big airflow and cooling important), Cooling (he wants it as silent and as cool as possible - but I've never touched watercooling before) and a TV card (to watch and record TV).

All his old stuff is probably going to be going into MM in a few weeks so someone might grab a bargin, I've taken the PC apart now so all this stuff was only used for 8 days (and only actually used in that time for less than 10 hours!).

Do your best!

why is he selling? there is nothing wrong with that build as it is allready supper fast but oh well

im speccing now but could you link the ram?

Eh? Why does he need to upgrade?

Unless he is completely minted I'd tell him to spend money elsewhere, as that's just a good way to waste a grand!

Get a 2500k in there and swap the ssd... you wont get much faster than that.

If he really really wants to you could maybe drop in a 6990, but tbh there is very little point selling up.

He should look at spending the money elsewhere in his system, more monitors or something?

Yeah that PC cost him about £850 last week, but he's come into a much bigger bonus than he was expecting, realises he can sell most of the stuff for 80% of what he paid and go all out.

RAM is THIS.

I've had words with him already guys, he is minted, he has a 24" and a 26" TV right next to it, he's happy with that so it's going on this PC.

Remember his total outlay on a £1500 machine may only be £800 cause he's gonna get a fair bit for this build back in sales.

swap the memory i specced for another pair of the stuff you already got and use current psu. also i don't see why he couldn't use both ssd's. i added another hdd for more storage. and then you have a 16gb memory i7 2600k super fast dream machine that can play any game and watch t.v without excellent sound quality

Looks good but is the case really worth that? For this sort of money is it not silly to not get 16GB Ram (for future) and two graphics cards?

The Ram he has now isn't the fastest stuff you can get though is it? Is the PSU up to the job of a £1500 machine?

I was thinking get one of those super fast SSD's with about 200GB of storage for his OS, keeping his 64GB for applications/games and then using his 2TB for storage.

No more extra storage is needed though.

Sound quality - he is happy with his current speaker set running off his motherboard, will a sound card make that much difference?

Cooling is really important, the PC will be on the floor in a corner near his bed. It's quite a warm room, it'll be under a desk so really need to make sure temps are kept as minimal as possible while taking into account noise.

The case is a bit extravagant, but with good cooling and may run largely passive. it can be watercooled later and will last several builds.

Dimensions: 212 x 497 x 616 mm (BxHxT)
- Material: Aluminium Casing, Steel Structure
- Motherboard Compatability: ATX, Micro-ATX, SSI CEB
- Revolutionary unique 90° degree motherboard mounting
- Supports internal radiator mounting
- Motherboard back plate cut out for easy CPU cooler removal
- Foam Padded interior for advanced noise absorption
- 4.5mm aluminium body
- Cooling: 3x 180 mm bottom mounted fans, 1x 120 mm top mounted fan

I did not see the point of a £500 graphics card as the 480 is nearly as fast as a 580 and can be SLI'd in the future. You could get another 6870 though in crossfire.

120Gb should be OK for the OS and key programs with the 64Gb in reserve or as a quick pagefile drive.

8gb ram should be enough for the time being, I note the speed though.

He's got this bonus and wants rid so his idea is spend this money now and then won't have to touch much for 3-4 years.

He'll get 80% back for the current ram as it's got less than 9 days of use since it was brand new so he'd rather get the quickest and best stuff possible for his budget. I know 8GB is enough now but who knows in 3 years time he may be doing loads of photoshop work and need the 16GB so I'd want that if I was spending this much money.

How about SLI-ing the 480? Or is there really no point?

What do you mean by the case will run largly passive?

With the OS drive, 120GB might be enough but if a 200GB or something is only £50 more then worth going for it. I'm not sure what to do with his old 64GB SSD, is it really worth keeping it, I mean it'll get used for fast storage but not sure if it's really worth the bother?

I would go for 12800 1600Mhz ram personally, whether he needs 16Gb is debatable even for photoshop. lots of virtual machines running simultaneously maybe.

I would see if the single graphics card was enough before using SLI or crossfire with a new or existing card. Another card adds heat and noise to the case and you do not get twice the performance.

With good airflow in the case, the components will run cooler and quieter ie the CPU and Graphics card(s).

Another £50 will take you to 160Gb SSD, £100 will get you 240Gb.

PS I got £2000 bonus this year, 50% to the taxman, 50% to my wife :(

Is getting 6GB (3x2GB) of tri channel better than getting 16GB of duel channel (4x4GB)?

What about PC15000 stuff like THIS?

I think for the extra £100 the 240GB would be best, I take it he doesn't lose any speed? His current SSD is like 250mb/s or something but I saw some of them were like 600mb/s!

Agree with you on the SLI and crossfire, 1 of those 480's will do!

His bonus was 5 figures, he wants rid before the wife gets a chance!

Tri channel was for the older i7 boards and no dual is best for sandybridge.

Not much point going above 1600Mhz for ram

The SSD I priced was Read Speed: 450MB/Sec, Write Speed: 210MB/Sec, Flash: MLC, Controller: Marvel, Buffer: 0MB

I do not use one myself so maybe ask others.

Someone can price this up for me.. I'm too lazy.
