what can a £500 or £600 card do that would be noticeable compared to a £250/£300 card?

on a 24" monitor 1900x1280

would you really be able to tell the difference?

I'm tempted to sell my GTX 460 and buy two 5850's, in crossfire they are better than most cards.

Any idea if my 530W PSU would be ok to support those cards?

I guess the really expensive cards would be better if you had multiple monitors or use 3D. For a single monitor setup you wouldn't need such a high end card.

The following games at max settings with smooth experience (average fps ~ 60, min fps > 45 for most of the time):

Crysis
Crysis Warhead
Metro 2033
Dragon Age 2 + Official High Resolution Textures
Crysis 2

afaik there is no single GPU capable of dealing with these games.

definitely not, I would want a PSU with 45A on the 12v rail minimum.

Higher frame rates, less of a performance drop when all eye candy and AA is applied on all games bar the odd one that isn't as well supported / awaiting a patch. For most, not all, but in a large majority of games, a £200 - £250 card will accomplish most demands made of it.

Damage your bank balance
Lol, very true. Ive only ever bought one high end card, (gtx 280). Normally i buy a medium range model, then add another when prices fall, or go second hand. My current 470's worked out at £260.00, after selling my gtx 275's and game codes that came with the 470's. They blitz through any game im playing with ease at 1920x1200, used to run them overclocked, now at stock as nothing really stresses them.

well 2 6950 2gbs for about £400 are actually faster than the big two 590's/6990s in some things (when unlocked).

Complete waste of money and also wasted time making em.

I would have to say, after owning both, the MSI lighting 6970 and 5970, that the MSI is piratically on par.

the only problem is crossfire can still be like a broken biscuit assortment, hence why so many people buy single fastest cards. TBH tho now is a good time for anyone to try crossfire seeing has you can pick up a pair of 5850's for around £250 and if you already own a 5850 in the first instance your laughing

What about the micro-stuttering? is it not a common problem?
