Didnt think it would happen to me...

I agree with Castiel here on thinking the OP should have done more... feel sorry for you, but i don't really know why you stopped for a hodded guy when you couldnt see their face, and dont know how they got close enough to punch you ... A knife wouldnt have really been my concern.. if they had one they would have had it in hand, and even if they didnt have one in hand they would have had to take the time to get it out their pocket, during which time would leave them open to being hit in the face, or you running away....

Had the guy had a knife in hand, my response would have just been to run.. I don't have any training in knife disarms etc....

I dont really think the other guy had the "upper hand" he certainly had a height disadvantage and had to get close enough to you to hit you in the face..... gutted for the OP, losing a tooth sucks :/

This I agree with. :)

Like i said, I keep myself to myself. I didnt know if His mates were hiding, Or if he had a knife?

My grandfather always used to tell me "he who turns and runs away lives to fight another day!"

He was in the Royal Engineers and survived Dunkirk when his boat was sunk by artillery fire. So he was no pussy ;)

Definitely did the right think walking away.

There is also a time to stand and fight, he would have told you that also.

Anyway OP have you found and bashed the offender yet, thats the main thing.

Then why did he wait for the chap in the first place, wouldn't it have been better to run when he was shouted at in the first place...."oi mate" isn't something that someone you know would be shouting at you is it?

Totally agree, "oi mate" is how it kicks off, I certainly wouldn't be thinking happy thoughts and waiting around for him. Surprised you have your phone and wallet tbh.

OP said he thought the guy was his brother or one of his mates thats why he waited for him. So that probably wasn't the best time to run away... personally if I thought my brother said 'Oi mate' to me I wouldn't run away.

I think OP ran away at just the right time, when he realised he was in a bad situation and had just taken a punch.

Didn't your senses elevate when you turned around to see some lad with his hood up shout at you in a rough part of town late at night when you're on your own?

You had time to assess the situation and whether he had friends nearby, you were drunk but not to the point where you needed to call a Taxi to get home, your senses should have sharpened up and you should have fought back or ran away before he got to you.

My issue is with the fact that he ran off only to return with his brother and a gang of mates with the obvious intention of beating the fella up.

That just smacks of cowardice to me, he is not prepared to stand up for himself when alone against a single assailant, but is prepared to act the hard man when he and his mates out number the chap.

How does that make him any different to the idiot that hit him in the first place?

I can't see why he would have waited to begin with, even if he thought it was someone he knew, as he got closer it would have been pretty obvious that it wasn't, and why did he not at least punch the guy back before running off to get his mates?

If he was going to run, then at the point of "oi mate" or shortly after would have been the time, and not returning with a gang would have been better, and I would have more sympathy for the OP. I have a suspicion that he is not being fully forthcoming with the detail tbh.

I don't agree with the coming back with mates part either but up until that point I would have probably done the same thing, its just not worth the risk imo.

I just don't see how hitting the guy back would have helped in the slightest. Best case scenario if you hit back is you floor him in one and feel good about yourself for a while, which really doesn't help much except feeling a bit better. That is only the best case as well, and considering OP wasn't expecting a fight and the other guy was it probably wouldn't have ended up that way, and worst case gets a whole lot worse than your original position of just the one punch that is inevitable anyways.

Thats just me though, never gotten myself in a situation like this, only fight I've been in was a guy trying to fight my mate on his own with me there... Needless to say it didn't end up well for the other guy..

True, there is. I used to be all pent up as a kid, almost looking for scraps. Then one day I realised that if somebody is going to start a scrap with me for no good reason it's pretty clear that they have nothing to lose, whereas I have everything to lose.

It sucks for the OP, no doubt and I'm sure it would have been very satisfying to kerb-stomp the ******* given the chance, but you have to ask yourself if the inherent risk of the situation would have been worthwhile. If he's willing to sock you for no reason, what else is he capable of?

And even if he was a runt and wasn't carrying any form of weapon, who does he know that is bigger and more dangerous than him? Violence is rarely the answer and most of the time it simply begets more violence. File a police record and move on, the **** storm that would likely ensue is not worth getting caught in.

running away is often a great idea and i cant fault the OP for that

but running away just so you can get your mates and go looking for the guy as a gang ? shady... its probably thinking like that by which makes people want to randomly hit you
