Hi All

My 480 soc arrived from OCuk today, I have installed and everything is going well. How ever as some of you may know i only have a 550Watt psu with a 29Amp 12v rail (dual rail 1X14 1X15a) I have been playing IL2 cliffs of dover that came out on friday (this game is Hungry) im getting about 30fps on high not ultra high over heavily populated ground and upto 60 - 70 over water in a dog fight,
But I have had one Bluescreen already and it related to the g-card accoring to a quick google of the code. what would the symptoms be if my psu is not meaty enough ? apparft from that its running fine here is my full spec

E7300 c2d 2.66 @ 3.8
4gb dominator 1066
asus p5q-pro
Thermaltake TR2 550watt psu

im thinking i need a new psu now, i have the chance to pop into Reading tomorrow so i can go to N0vatech (sorry ocuk your just not local for small bits i can grab)

so do you think the BSOD could be related to the PSU ? i have also had the game Crash twice (windows error just reloaded game) this did not happen on my old 9800gtx+

thoughts ?

also what sort of power psu do you think i need ? i have noticed that modern 550w psu's have double the amps of mine on the 12v

I got a GTX560 Ti and 550 W aswell, didnt go for the 480 because my PSU would not be enough, and this is your problem aswell

You need a new PSU, 600W+, preferably in the 700s

Application crashes can be a symptom, tho more typically insufficent power will result in the PC randomly rebooting or shutting off.

its not rebooting or shutting off tho i have not played anything for any length of time, might go grab a 650W tomorrow, (gets me out of sitting round the in-laws to be ;)

ok well randomly its running as sweet as a Nut now :D the whole PC is kicking out a bit of warmth from the top but no crashing any more.. so after spending £200 this month i might just leave it for this month and then grab a 900watt next month (if i spend another £100-150 this month i will be dead lol) and just future proof myself as i plan on getting a i5 or what ever comes out next in the summer, who knows maybe another 480 to sit along side that one :)

If you are getting the odd bluescreen then underclock the card, this will reduce the power requirement.

If the card is then fine underclocked then one of 2 things has happened:

1) Your psu isnt up to the job

2) The card isnt happy at stock.

To check if it is 2) up the volts a little (however this will increase power draw and may cause 1) :D

just be warned if you stress your PSU too much it could damage the PSU best case - or damage the PSU and take out the graphics card and other components - so be warned

as your PSU is a decent brand one if it were to fail it should do in a safe way to the rest of your equipment - but you are taking quite a risk

cheers Buckster for the info and Straxusii, i only had one blue screen and its not done it again, I will defo go grab another PSU looking around the 750-800w mark its amazing the difference between them on the 12v rails

tbh i will just grab a new PSU will be willing to spend £100 odd on one but road tax and other things this month including the new 480 will slow the purchase down :(

I Bought the 700w OCZ thats on offer from OCUK at the moement.
this was recommended to me by there tech staff at OCUK who use them in there test machines.

I was in the same position as you, i bought the card and didnt realise just how power hungry these things are.

if you got £100 to spend then i would recomend this and pay a little extra

Don't get the OCZ StealthXstream 2 series. There is a reason they are so cheap, in that FSP manufactures the actual innards of the PSU. FSP have always been known to be a bit dodgy, and certainly not one to put too much stress on.

If you don't want to spend too much, and don't mind forgoing modular cables, you could go for the Xfx 850w core edition. Great PSU (based on Seasonic, one of the best manufacturers out there) for £80.

I'd recommend going for http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-000-XF&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=1497 over the Corsair model. You get 850w for cheaper, and there is no difference between the two performance-wise (Xfx uses Seasonic platform, Corsair uses CWT platform, both extremely stable and indistinguishable from each other). The only difference is the extra 2 years warranty you get on the Corsair.

If I was spending that kind of money I'd rather go for this:

But seriously, OP wants something around £50. That's impossible, but I'd say this comes close at £69:
