Interested in getting a machine with the following specs:

Core 2 Solo SU7300, integrated GMA X4500MHD GPU
3GB DDR3
Windows 7 Home Premium

Model number UL30A-QX328V

Can it play 720p mkv files okay? How about 1080p? (downscaled to fit the 1366x768 screen). If it can't play 1080p then that isn't too much of a problem (gaming PC can take care of that ;))... playing 720p mkv files is the main thing.

thanks

Yes 720p easily.

I can't be bothered to transfer a 1080p mkv file to my laptop. Might work.

Tried on a Vostro V13, su7300 + 3gb ddr3.

Should be fine. I have the Asus UL30A with a core 2 celeron at a slightly lower clock speed and it can play them no problem. 3GB ram same as the one you're looking at and X4500 integrated graphics.

Battery life is fantastic on these as well btw. Easily get 8 hours off the plug for basic browsing etc

Looking to get the same one as the OP (i assume from the same place too ;)).

I put a thread in the laptops section, but haven't got a response yet :( Hopefully its ok if I ask the questions about the notebook here?

I would be coming from a Dell Studio 1555 with a Pentium Dual Core T4300 (2.1Ghz). Would the downgrade in processor be noticeable? I only use my laptop for browsing and word processing, so I guess it should be ok and its nippy enough for Windows 7?

EDIT: Just noticed in the OP, the model is Core 2 Duo, not Solo, just so you know! :D

I also have a Sony Vaio laptop with an Intel Core 2 Duo 2Ghz which was replaced by the Asus UL30A as I needed something more portable. I would probably say that its slightly noticeable in that things generally aren't as snappy and may take a second or two more to load. It is only slight however, I was pleasantly surprised at the power of these dual core ULV processors, even though they have a low clock speed by today's usual standards. However for basic usage such as browsing and word processing, my UL30A is more than adequate. I've even used it for light photoshopping and Matlab while I have been away from home.

Thanks for the reply!

How do you find the build quality of the UL30? Also, do the fans spin up often and is it noisy when they do?

No, I can rarely ever hear the fan on it and even when it comes on its whisper silent. Its certainly a lot quieter than the fan cooling the 2Ghz core duo in my Vaio. I'd imagine this probably has something to do with the fact that the UL30 has a ULV (ultra low voltage) processor that combined with low clock speeds = low heat production.

As for the build quality, I'd probably rate it as decent rather than class leading. Its a mixed bag because there is flex in the palm rest area below the keyboard and there is slight flex in the keyboard itself when you press on it. The latter is barely noticeable though, I probably only picked up on it because I read it on a forum. I've had it since October last year and it was taken to Uni every day of the week in my bag and chucked around etc and it has held up well with no issues. My Vaio however has a broken barrel hinge so the bit where you plug the charger in is loose :( Stupid Sony design!! Just shows barely any laptop has perfect build quality - Macs are probably the leaders in this.

I paid £349 for my UL30 and I was massively impressed with it. Don't let my comments on the build quality put you off, they are minor and barely noticeable. From my experience of Dell laptops at work, the build quality isn't far off them anyway.

Pretty sure the important thing here is the GPU. The newer GMAs (such as that 4500MHD) are designed for HD video decoding so I would've thought that 720 and 1080p video shouldn't be an issue :)

The GPU in your machine most likely supports DXVA (GPU acceleration), at least it does with my laptop when using MPC-HC video player.

My laptop is a HP Dm1 (Intel SU2300 1.2ghz Celeron Dual Core, Intel GMA 4500MHD GPU). Handles 1080p MKVs perfectly fine, with low CPU usage due to the GPU acceleration.
