Hi there, I was in my local pc component store yesterday and the sales person told me the gtx590 is recognised by windows as a single gpu and shows up as 3GB of VRAM! I have GTX295 which the 590 replaces but that shows up as 2 gpu's and only 896mb VRAM as it's 2x 896 and 1792 total. Is he correct or just lying to make a sale?

Why do people who have access to the internet and OCUK still shop at PC component stores, or ask retail salespeople for hardware advice?

People who actually have a clue about PCs dont end up working in PC retail shops, anyone who has a bit of experience working behind the till in a newsagent or supermarket does.

When you ask them for help on the products they are selling, the reply goes along the lines of - 'Herp derp derp! Ah gotta make sumfink up to sell mah produkt!'

I still go to the purple shirt store to amuse myself occassionally. Prices are so high (esp on gfx cards) that its no wonder the pc market went south.

Yeah, sometimes if I'm bored I may take a wander up to one of their stores just to have a look around.

It's pretty cool when they try to sell you crap and you tell them otherwise.

Correction: People who don't have a clue about PC's work in large chains of stores.

I find their adverts on the TV infuriating too. That fast-talking woman who talks about 'Gigs' and nothing else on their 'latest Core i3 laptops'. It makes me

haha I do the same. Free amusement at laughing at their prices thinking "are they ******** serious with these prices!?" :D

Heh, know what you mean. I went there at the weekend to look at a laptop (before I buy it online) and they were still trying to sell 5850's for >£200. Or one of their top of the range 'Gaming' pc's with a 5750 gfx card (and still charging £1400 for it)

I love proving people wrong in PC shops haha! They speak absolute crap then you come out with the correct info and they look at you like youve quoted from Star Trek haha

to say that everyone who works in large retail stores that sell pc's are ignorant is just wrong and rather stupid. considering that ocuk is also a large retail store. (so your saying that gibbo is an ignorant fool is he )

i know a few people that work in the retail industry that certainly know exactly what they are talking about, and pass on that knowledge to customers.

I know a few also who work in pc retail and are great people. People who think most of them dont know everything about pc parts or just general things they sell are some what correct.

But what do you expect when there getting paid 6 quid an hour and the company provides no training. Or there botherd about is the sale.

I think it's more large retail chains. I certainly haven't met many people if at all in any large retail chain that knows what they're talking about whether it comes to computers or audio/video equipment either. I'd love to be able to go into one of those stores and get some good advice from someone, but I can't see it happening anytime soon, as like mentioned above, they don't get paid enough, and it's a wasted talent working at chains like those when you have the knowledge to work in higher end stores. For instance I wouldn't trust the advice of people from c*m*t or c*r*y*s, but I would be more likely to from the likes of S*p*r Fi, or Riche* S*u*ds when it comes to audio/video equipment.

Asterix's used incase using the full names is against the rules, I'm sure you can guess who I mean.

As an IT Technician, I receive calls daily from people in "IT distress". One of my Customers was a staff member of the "purple kind" who asked for help when his Home PC was playing up. He admitted to me when I visited his poorly Home PC that he had very little IT experience just vast Sales experience!! :D

i find it funny that you get a kick from going around that shop

I go in there thinking there might be the occasional bargain, and because well.. I like PC's/Electronics. I nearly always walk out feeling glad I know about PC's when I look at the prices (primarily gfx card prices), and wonder how they survive in the market anymore. But the same can be said for the other hardware they sell.

I don't think it's wierd I do it at all. I find it keeps my interest up.

BTW.. I remember the days when places like a certain 2nd hand computer store would get the latest and greatest graphics card's first, nowadays it's all about buying power from places like OcUK. A good thing for consumers, shame for the shops.

but even ocuk site state it has 3gb... they should put 1.5gb per core, total 3gb (1.5gb usage)

same goes for other dual gpu cards

Not all stores are like this. I used to work in a small local computer shop just after i finished my GCSE's. Great experience, learnt a ton and we always went forward with the ethos that customers know best.

If we were unaware of something we would research into it.

In this case, the guy has probably just made a simple mistake! Cut him some slack. :)
