don't forget it will cost about $20 each way for taxi

my trip this year is not on scale of recent ones, last year's was absolutely mental any my wallet is still recovering

Yeah well 4 of us are going, so $5 each for a taxi is nothing :)

Well yes Im assuming Im going to spend more money that I budget for, it is Vegas after all!

I'm not going crazy, I want to do everything I want to do but I'm not planning to be excessive.

My main concern is the plane journey, 11 hours is a long time. Luckily I have some stuff on my iPad to keep me entertained but I'm sure it won't be much fun!

Thats nothing, I flew from Aberdeen - London - Philadelphia - Vegas - total travel time around 24hrs! :o On the way there i was up for about 28hrs and on the return journey i was up for about 34hrs with work the following day!

Driving to the Canyon isn't as easy as you think - its a LONG way from Vegas, it's about a 7-8 hour drive really.
No it's not. We got a coach to the Canyon from Vegas which took a couple of hours. Unfortunately we had to endure the film 'Click' enroute.

You've got to do the Skywalk. Really cool (and a little bit nerve racking!).

Stopping at Hoover Dam was also fantastic.

4 of us went last year ( 2 couples ) for 9 nights, spent £10k on top of the £4k for flights and hotels

you went to the West Rim, he wants to go the the South Rim, the West Rim is not really the Grand Canyon, it is actually a place called the West Canyon which has been rebranded by tour companies/hualapai indians

It takes 4 and half hours each way. So 9 hours total.

Thats fine, 4 1/2 hours is what we are expecting, would have been nice to stop over and spend 2 days in total, but as we are only there for 6 nights we will have to do it in a single day

Here's hoping I dont get lost at night on the way back to Vegas :D

You didn't go to the Grand Canyon you went to the place of the Indian scammers.

As others have said, you didnt actually go to the Grand Canyon at all. You went to somewhere similar, thats well marketed, and run by a bunch of scammers.

I tell you what, rather than just slam me, why not offer some friendly advice?

I've told you that you can get the car for half that price, I've told you that the offer you've seen excludes important insurance, and I've told you the best way to visit the Canyon on a day trip.

What more do you want me to do?! My post contained lots of thoughts and advice.

Hehe I know Fox its just the way you went about it :) no need to be so abbrasive!

Ive actually looked around and the cheapest I can find a Mustang Convertible for, in and around Vegas, is the price Ive got, collision damage waiver is $21.50/day and the Liability is $29.90/day, will work out at about $130 for the car for the day + more for extra milage, we are figuring roughly $300 for the day, including petrol costs.

$150 each for an amazing drive to the Grand Canyon and back isnt bad surely?

I had a look on Hertz and they were asking for $150 for the Mustang Convertible for pickup in Vegas.

I'd have stayed over even with 6 days because as it is your going to spoil two nights in Vegas, you will need to go to bed Early the night before as you are going to want to set off early 8am would be the latest I'd consider, assuming good traffic and no stop at the Hoover damn (wish I would call madness) then you will get to the canyon at 13:00 (ish) you will certainly need a couple of hours to have a look (absolute bare minimum) and grab a bight to eat this will see you leaving around 16:00 and getting back to Vegas around 23:00 tired and hungary after a very long day on the road.

If you opted for a stop over you could happily go out the night before and leave mid/morning or lunchtime to drive the the Canyon this would then let you enjoy an evening and sunset at the canyon after the day trippers have left, get up the next day after a good nights rest and enjoy another visit to the canyon (I found it even more impressive the next day) which could include a short walk into it then head back to vegas before the day trippers arrive getting back for another big night out.

Also I wouldn't want a convertible to drive to the canyon, You'll want the roof up if you spending 8 hours in the desert sun otherwise you'll have to lather on the factor 50.

It's still sinking in since the first post to suggest as such :o:(

To be honest, if is your first time and you're only there for six days. I wouldn't bother driving to the Grand Canyon. It's not like it is going anywhere, just go next time.

Will do my best!

Has anyone here ever driven from Vegas to the Grand Canyon south rim?

Having some problems finding directions :S

Yes. I have. It's a nice drive.

Get on 93 southbound from Vegas

I40 East bound.

64 at Williams Northbound.

All in all its about 260 miles.

At the South Rim which is also known as Tusayan, there's really not much in way of shops etc.. Just a few souvenier shops and a few at best 3star hotels. BUT you are not going there for the shopping. ;)

Have fun, I done a helicopter ride whilst there.

Nonsense. We are in April. The weather is perfect there right now. Mid 20's max during the peak of the day.

Actually I'd say that is the most essential part of the road trip.

Once again. Nonsense.

It'll blow you away and make your trip. Otherwise you'll be doing the same crap for 6 days in Vegas. 4 days at the strip and you've done it all.

Do it ! you won't regret it.
