New PC (big budget)

It's nearly 2 weeks ago now, he missed out by being lazy, not making his mind up quick enough and a few days. He's not too bothered he'll get most of the money back on the stuff he sells and stuff he doesn't he'll just keep for a rainy day.

Isn't that the older i7 socket and CPU?

i7 2600k has got a bit more grunt about it though doesn't it, it's not just the clock speed which is different. Plus spending £1500 and not getting an i7 seems a bit weird to me and the price difference isn't that big.

Yes it is the older i7. But it's hex core, they overclock well and i'm sure you mentioned about doing graphics work somewhere? It's just another option as he doesn't seem to quite know what he wants!

Think I'd rather get him the newer tech, better scope for upgrade and those 2600k's look a great chip. The older i7 stuff is more expensive as well.

the 16gb of ram wont give you any for years and years. I've got 8gb of ram and Im telling you I rarely use more than 4 (ive only seen it once!). That's with gaming and a little bit of PS.

Getting 16gb is complete overkill. You said he won't see any improvement from a better PSU, well he won't from more ram either.

Get a bigger SSD, create a decent backup raid of hard disks.. Anything but waste all that money on ram, just for a bigger e-peen!.

Point taken,

8GB it is, but he'll still insist on the PC15000 stuff.

What's it worth upgrading then, I've never setup RAID before but the thought of maybe getting a 3TB to backup his SSD and 2TB sounds good.

I would suggest a bigger SSD but that one is the only one in stock with those really fast read and write speeds.

Raid is pretty simple - there's plenty of guides out there.

Buy a pair of 2tb drives and mirror them (raid1), so data is constantly backed up.

Maybe you could also create a small partition in the raid volume for SSD backups?

He has a 2TB already (Samsung F3), could he not get a 3TB and raid the 2TB and SSD?

16gb ram? 580GTX? He never finishes a game? This does not compute! :p

Money to blow.

He's going to order tonight/tomorrow, only going for stuff in stock this is what he's gone for.

Any reason not to go for these parts before he orders?

Minimal gaming at the moment, he'll pick one up, play it for half an hour and get bored.

End of the day 480 is still a good card and if in 2/3 years he wants to game more heavily or give it to one of his kids he can just pay £200-£300 and get the best that is available at the time.

Wow....£700 notes on 850Gb HDD space. Crazy! Lol

He only wanted the smaller 120GB SSD but it's not in stock. He was specific about wanting the fastest one (about 500mbs read/write) and all the others only offer 200/300.

He'll still use his 2TB for backup and the SSD and new HDD for day to day.

I still could'nt justify that amount of money, even if i was a millionaire. A pound is a pound.

can I just ask what the purpose of the raptor drive is?

They're pretty noisy, and as its not the OS drive you probably won't see any improvement from it what so ever..

A compromise between not being able to get a 1TB SSD. Not set in stone if they really are not worth it though.

I'd go with a conventional drive tbh, The SSD is there for apps that really demand speed, and for others the difference between a raptor and a standard drive will be minimal.

If he isnt gaming then there is no need to sell his current graphics, no need for a massive power supply and no need for massive amounts of RAM.

He may have money sitting around but why not just do this 'small' upgrade and get a new hobby or something?
