What's the best MMO out now, or coming out this year?

Well, I think that Guild Wars, Lotro and DDO are better than WoW in every way.

I also prefered Age of Conan, but I dont want to pay fees for any game.

The only reason why WoW is still so successful is because most people playing it refuse to move on or try other games, not because it is better in any way.

Poppycock!

I played everything out there and i'm now subbed with WOW again. Played LOTRO, WARHAMMER, DDO, VANGUARD, and probably another couple i got sucked into.

I'm not a wow fanboy but I have to say I do like it I loved Warhammer and might have considered it but the cost is crazy 15 euro a month to sub.... lol come on.

You are aware that WoW for it's "12 million subscribers" splits them up into servers that hold a few thousand a time yes? So you are not going to notice the difference between a game with a million servers and a game with 10 in terms of concurrent players online...

Was referring to Darkfall, its empty most the time, or feels like it.

The "best" MMORPG's are not neccessarily the best looking ones.
WOW looks nice and pretty, but as a game is pretty Meh.
Oh I know there are those that will defend it to the end of days - but compared to the mechanics of many other games out there it is extremely lacking.
Also the fact you can "Max" characters in next to no time shows the type of game it is - must get to the mmaximum level as quickly as possible.
Those games that require a "journey" are far more exciting.
But alas those are the games with less subscribers - however you could argue it's quality over quantity.

Whereas WOW with it's simple game mechanics, simple path to maximum level has lots and lots of subscribers, these tend to be those that don't want to put too much thought into things.
They are the people who mindlessly gamed on consoles before giving PC gaming a try.
You'll see this from their character names, the way they talk (or don't talk) in game.
Those games with far less subscribers but vastly superior games mechanics are less populated - but these are the people who took part in real challenges in the past, with games such as UO, EQ1 and the like.

Best bet is just to try and see which style suits you best.
If it's mindless dropping in without really needing to think about things then WOW or similar will be idea for you.
Look at the games with a much lower subscriber rate if you want something that will actually challenge you.

Since WOW has such a huge player base, and has been around for a while it will take something seriously impressive to knock it off its perch as the top MMO.

I also agree with what Bhavv was saying that since WOW has sucked so many people in, and got them into the game, the lore, and their own characters they will find it hard to jump ship and commit to another game from the start.

Personally I don't play WOW anymore, but I don't think I've come across any other game that sucks you in with the way it does, and has so many other people out there playing it making you really feel part of that fictional world.

The only new game I can see grabbing some of the WOW fan base is the new Star Wars game, but unless it hits the ground running it could flop in the long term.

Those arguing that WoW isnt the biggest and best out there are kidding themselves. You measure success in an industry whose sole purpose is to get people to pay to play your games by the amount of people paying to play it. End of. Your opinion might be there are better games out there, that money isnt the be all and and all. The games companies youre talking about as better? they dont agree with you, they would tear off a ball to have WoWs revenue.

Back on track, alternatives to WoW. Youve said new so I presume youve already taken into account SWTOR, which we can only hope is done right. For my picks for alternatives going now -

Rift - heard good things, borrowed a lot of successful mechanics from WoW, so may remind you of it! Same kind of setting as well so probably not.

LOTRO - great mmorpg, suffciently different from wow to feel fresh.

Fallen Earth - MMOFPS, probably at the limit of what can be done on todays connections. Kind of fun but the fps aspect feels a bit anaemic. (this is the major problem with MMOFPSs, weve been spoilt by the fluidity of 32 player maps which currently cannot be translated into an open ended world and it all comes off feeling a bit juddery and naff). Crafting and the like is pretty involving but quests/progress is a bit samey.

Darkfall - Fun for about 4 weeks until you get tired of getting ganked and all your stuff stolen / wearing your less than best stuff in order not to have high level players swat you and nick it. This was probably my second fave MMORPG because it was so unique to loot stuff that *should* be on the mob you just killed. The FPS was pretty good too but the world was empty, and those you did see were high level decked out PKs. Theres apparently one guy who does nothing but PK. Funny the first time, not so much the tenth.

For me (WoW player looking for something else) im lining up Minecraft (which looks very good - search yogcast in youtube for hilarity and to see gameplay - this will really test your love of gameplay over graphics) and a return to my old haunt WWIIOL. For simulated mass combat there really is no better out there, especially for propellor heads. Good Luck.

There are F2P and Asian games with a larger account/userbase. Doesn't WoW State x amount of million accounts? Which takes in to consideration all trial accounts/banned accounts etc?

true, but I cant imagine any of these games are a charitable enterprise and when its revenue that counts, nothing comes even close to Blizz.

I'm not disagreeing with you but F2P games do generate a huge amount of revenue.

One game I was playing I was spending £300 a week on the cash shop. A recent game I played my guild had 150 + members. At least 50 were spending 100 euro a week on the game and around 20 had spent 10k + on the game ( over the space of 3 months )

The above are examples on games with a smaller userbase. Now you look at those numbers on the scale I gave and multiply that by more you're looking at a lot of money.

Those arguing that WoW isnt the biggest and best out there are kidding themselves.

It makes perfect sense though, I'm not kidding myself that WoW isnt the best, because for me WoW isnt the best. Not by a long long way. I'm hardly going to say that WoW is the best MMO I've ever played when I dont personally think that WoW is the best MMO I've ever played. As I've said before, everyone has their own playstyles and their own idea of what is the best MMO for them. So I think its perfectly fair if I say that I dont think that WoW is the best out there. I'm sure that lots of people do think WoW is the best MMO out there, and I'm equally sure that lots of people dont think WoW is the best out there.

Its kind of hard to declare one of anything the best out there, I mean ...what is the best chocolate bar out there? Mars? Snicker? Wispa....its entirely subjective and different people will have different answers.

It depends by what criteria a person is deciding something is the best, for some , the best is defined by how much money it makes, whereas for me, I qualify a games ability to be the "best" by how I rate the game, rather than its profits.

Hi there, I've only ever played wow, and quit that a few years ago, probably played hardcore for first 4 years.

Any good mmo's out that are better then wow? I've already tried city of heroes, guild wars, eve, warhammer, age of conan, and so far none of them seemed better then wow, so am yet to find an mmo that is new and fresh and keeps me interested.

EDIT: I'm wanting an mmo with amazing graphics/gameplay and to be better then wow in every way.

Thanks in advance.

Star Wars: The Old Republic.

End thread.

The only one that looks like its gonna be any good is GW2, nothing out now is better than WoW, i had high hopes for rift, got a character to max level buts its a boring, extremely shallow dull game.

SWTOR looks garbage too, plus its being made by bioware who have gone really downhill the past 2 years or so.

What on earth does making money have to do with being a good game?

Here is 1 game (of very very many) that is better than WoW in EVERY way:

You got to be kidding, I just tried the trial and it's pretty crap. Sandbox yes but no community and hardly any players. Macroing skills up isn't exactly 'fun'.

To the op I suggest you try EVE if you wanna try something totally different. Usually 40k plus people online so I'm guessing it's the second biggest mmon after wow in terms of long term subscribers.

Otherthan that I'd wait for gw2 I'm sure it'll deliver

Im just dreaming, but Id love to see a Space Combat/Trading MMO with the gameplay of Privateer/Freelancer.

(I tried EVE but found the combat very dry and uninvolving)

You've made me all sad now... Can only dream of a Freelancer MMO (though that said, MP was pretty much an MMO in its own right)

@OP:
I'll relay to you some recent experience. STO, released 14 months ago, is a fine game and very different to the WoW clones. Fun questing, fantastic skill customisation, but can begin to dry out closer to end-game. Worth trying out.

SW:TOR, I've been waiting eagerly for this for years now, since back when the first rumours were coming out. This will be a very story-driven game. The graphics are a bit too cartoony for my liking, and I'm not keen on what they've done with character appearance and classes, but will be worth a look if you're into WoW. For me, it'll never beat pre-NGE/pre-CU SWG; nothing will.

Rift: I've been playing this for only 2-3 days but I'm loving it. The customisation is well thought out and it's extremely easy to start playing (though I'm still getting my head around the lore). Give it a go, you'll love it. :)

Talking out your ass...

So I am not allowed to think that a game out there is better than WOW because it is not the most successful?

You are obviously one of the brainless herd that cannot look beyond the walls of Azeroth, but there are plenty of game out there that are being made to fill a niche, not chase after WoW.

With your 'reasoning' Toyota is the best car manufactuer because it has sold the most, The Bible is the best book in the world because it is read the most, Avatar is the best film because it grossed the most?

I really wish people would look beyond subscription numbers when telling me whether or not the MMO I play is bad.

Why dont we try measuring it by satisfaction, I know plenty of people in lotro that have been playing since launch and unless there is some sort of NGE have no intention of going anywhere other than a lotro2... Whereas just about everyone I see who says they are playing wow follows that sentence by 'and im looking for a new game'
