What's the best MMO out now, or coming out this year?

Guild Wars 2 looks great but may not make it before the year is out. The Secret World is another with a unique take on things but it's from Funcom, so......could be a disaster :p

At any rate, they are the only two I see as not being generic MMO clones.
 
I doubt jump gate evolution will be released. Or not for a while at least. I was reading the forums and they are in all kind of legal troubles with the publishers. So it remains to be seen whether it will ever be released.

Well, I think that Guild Wars, Lotro and DDO are better than WoW in every way.

I also prefered Age of Conan, but I dont want to pay fees for any game.

The only reason why WoW is still so successful is because most people playing it refuse to move on or try other games, not because it is better in any way.

I doubt that most of the 10 million odd people subscribing to WoW have tried many other MMOs, otherwise those games would have had around 5 million sales?

Guild Wars 1 has had around 6 million sales, but that was mostly from tapping into the market of gamers that didnt want to pay fees and from totaling the sales of each individual campaign (Most players will have made 4 purchases, I have made 8 for two GW accounts).

A lot of people who play WoW are devoted to it to a point where they dont play other MMOs, and I dont blame them since most people would not play two games that require fees at the same time. That is generally why other fee based MMOs didnt become so successful because WoW has already captured the majority of the MMO market, and people who are willing to pay monthly fees wont usually play more than one such game because it gets far too expensive.

Best MMO out now, WoW.

Best MMO coming out? I'd like to think it'll be SWTOR, for me it will be atleast but again, it'll take something FAR more mighty to knock WoW from its perch. WoW2 for example.

I don't even play it any more but its a fact, it is the best MMO around atm.

No it doesnt require any of that, just simple common sense.

WoW - 10 million+ subscribers.

Most other MMOs - approx 500k - 1 million sales.

I'm pretty sure that most of WoWs player base cant be trying other games when they barely even manage to sell 10% as much as WoW.

World of Warcraft VS Guild Wars

Without question, you could not ask for a better final match-up than World of Warcraft versus Guild Wars. The king of pay-to-play MMORPGs (ranked #1 in GameOgre.com's list of p2p MMOs) against the king of Free MMORPGs (ranked #1 in GameOgre.com's list of p2p MMOs). Both games have millions of players and continue to grow with eagerly-awaited content expansions. Guild Wars has a chapter system that continues to improve with each new chapter and World of Warcraft is finally releasing an expansion after 2 years. In other words, both games are on fire with no signs of slowing down. That said, the only other match-up that would have been close to being as interesting would have been World of Warcraft versus RuneScape but RuneScape was upset in the first round by Maple Story.

Totally agree with you, it's no coincidence that the golden age was pre WoW as ever since all anyone tries to do is copy WoW..understandable from an economics stance but what a shame for innovation in the genre :(

Short answer - That game doesn't exist.

WoW has been going for 6 years now, it is backed by two of the largest and most successful video games companies on the planet and makes more money every day than most MMO's released in the last decade made in a year or in fact ever made before they inevitably fell flat.

The only games coming out that have even a glimmer of hope at being as good as WoW are Star Wars and GW2, I'm hearing good things about RIFT atm but that still quite new, however if they are better, they will not be better in every way, it's just not possible.

Also good luck finding an MMO that is not set in a fantasy setting, it's what sells and as such it's what gets made, unless you've got something like Star Wars of course which is lucky enough to have it's history and stuff already set up.

Honestly I think your best bet will be Star Wars really, the chances of anything else coming close to WOW within the next few years is so small it's not worth mentioning.

Didn't Jumpgate Evolution have a closed beta about a year ago, and then decide to redesign half the game based on the feedback?

That might be why their publisher's starting to get annoyed :)

You are aware that WoW for it's "12 million subscribers" splits them up into servers that hold a few thousand a time yes? So you are not going to notice the difference between a game with a million servers and a game with 10 in terms of concurrent players online...

I dont think there is a "best" mmo out now, its too personal and subjective. For instance I dont think that WoW is the best MMO out now at all, which immediately dismisses your first sentence. Everyone has different tastes, so its not a "fact" at all.

Eventually WoW will get knocked from its perch, or rather I think I should say it will fall from its perch rather than get knocked. WoW has very much been an anomaly in MMOs, I dont think we will again see a mainstream MMO reach the number of subs WoW peaked at. Indeed, I'd even go so far as to say that if WoW released today it wouldnt get to the number of subs it reached.
