Hi Everyone,
wish my first thread on here could be a bit more jolly but alas a sorry tale to tell. Anyway..
Got my new Gigabyte GTX480 SE today , had been looking forward to it and it was delivered very quickly so that was great.
Removed my GTX295 and fitted the GTX480 SE with great care and anti static strapped with cotton gloves as well !! fitted fine and hit the power switch, the fans on the GTX480 burst into life but nothing else did .... oh well i said, i'll check the power connectors , hmmm all ok there. booted again.... the green lights came on on top the GTX480 " oh great" i said So shut down and put the side panel on , booted..... nothing. Checked cables, all ok. Booted... nothing.
Reseated the card , booted... nothing. Refitted the GTX295 and it booted straight to Windows.
Just dont get it ,seems like an intermittent fault or incompatibility.
So now i have my RMA and will return it tomorrow. If it comes back ok then im stuck as i dont know what else to check really.
My GTX295 works fine each time and does every day . GTX480 SE just wouldnt post.
Any ideas or is just bad luck this time ?
Thanks all. ;)

What PSU do you have?
If you return, return under DSR as there is a fairly large chance it could be you

probably the card I'd guess - probably just DOA

as the 480 doesn't draw much during post/windows at all - no more than about 30-40W (I checked myself with mine when I had it) - so it won't be a power issue

its only under load that it really draws a load of power (an additional 200W plus)

just send it back for RMA and replacemnet - seems clear cut I'm sure you won't have an issue

Thanks Buckster and everyone for the reassurance , i am sending it back RMA , its strange that on one boot it did all fire up though , although it failed to on the initial boot and then didnt again. The Fans all span and that was that. It does seem intermittent , but again that isnt good !
I'll keep you posted ( pardon the pun) ;)

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO
RETURN UNDER DSR
If OcUK don't find the faults, you're screwed. DO NOT TAKE THAT CHANCE. I speak from experience :(

Nice pun BTW :D

Hi,
well i assume they will find the fault as its not my PC causing it to fail . Two leads going in 8 pin and 6 pin , works on my GTX295 and not the GTX480 with a 700W PSU. If i get it back like that , well id have to return for a refund instead . But i'm sure they'll come up trumps

Thats what i was saying to myself when i returned my card. NOT WORTH THE RISK!!!

Just use the webnote system and ask for a return under DSR.
I thunk they will check it. You wont be charged but your postage will not be refunded.

Ok ,ill mail them , i was supposed to return it tomorrow, but if i get a response from them in the morning i'll go send it. Thanks.

Looks like your mobo is one of the one's other people have had similar problems with the 400 series: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=187401&st=0

DSR the card and get something else - chances are the card will be fine on a different mobo.

Ok , im still wating for a reply, looks like ill have to give them a call.

update
Did call OC and they were very helpful and said there had been a few issues with this card and some mobo's and were going to give a refund. So i have now returned it . OC were great imo.
Still stuck with my BFG GTX295 and monster temps for now though , not sure what i should change it for , need something a bit more powerful and cooler !

6950 flashed to 6970 will give you performance very similar to the 480SE.

570 again will give you comparable performance.

If you don't plan on using a mental resolution, or using very high AA levels the 560Ti when OC'd will come very close to 480 speeds.

As well as seeing if you could try the card in a different machine.

By the way why did you shut down your computer, after you noticed all the green lights were on???

I had installed it but hadnt connected all the other USB leads etc and side panel, anyway it was erratic and wouldnt boot everytime , no go really.
