Going to be having my first venture into apple territory tomorrow with an iPhone 3G 8gb that a mates given me to fill in while my BB is in for repair, only problem is he thinks its locked to O2 and I don't want to pay to get it unlocked just for a few weeks use.
So I've had a quick google and all of the Jailbreak and unlock tutorials seem to apply to the newer phones, can anyone point me in the direction of a simple how to on how to carry it out on a 3G model.

If its on o2 just use their online unlock option, its usually free. I doubt they would charge you to unlock such an old phone, just say its for overseas use

I unlocked my 3gs using the free online service from o2 last week. (it was free)

usually takes a week or more and it did cost £15 online from o2

or what os is on iy it ifs 3.1.3 or below you can go jailbreak.me and slide slider..

it its 4.2.1 you need redsnow and ipsw plenty of guides

good luck

Cheers guys theres a chance its not locked as I havent had the chance to get it off him yet and check, is it worth updating to 4.2.1 if its not already there?

You sure? I got both 3Gs and 4 unlock by O2 for free! Took less than 24 hours in both cases.

positive and got £15 deduction because of it

iphone 4 not been out a year so deffo they would charge for that even more so if people had 24 month contracts. they may indeed do free unlocking for near out of contract.. and they cant unlock it they have to ask apple to i believe so in less than 24hrs is VERY quick indeed.

as i said it never used to be & im sure it was a year in to the contract. ,,, previous threads on here will verify this,, and the link does mention the £15 for payg,, also under certain contract you loose the bolt on unless you pay £10 etc..

Unlocked mine for free with O2, you just need to be atleast 12 months into your contract with them to get it done for free.
