What's the best MMO out now, or coming out this year?

Have you tried Black Prophecy, Star Trek, or Vendetta online? Though as I said before I think Black Prophecy needs a few more months of work before its worth playing.

The graphics in mmo's is all blocky and awful and most of time the textures look like they're on low settings.

Free to Play would be great, but obviously not going to happen for the top games. Even those that are free to play at the moment are only using an alternative method of income generation, whether its a restricted experience / level cap before you sub / store selling goodies.

As to graphics, its to appeal to the widest possible base. The most awesome graphics i have seen are wwiiol, simply because you can see for frikkin miles. Up close its blehh, but when youre standing on a tower looking through binoculars for incoming armour you dont really notice. Most of the whizz bang games have limited views unless youre talking crysis, and any MMO that had that grade of graphics would severely limit its player base!

Oh man, that would be so awesome, I reckon they'd have 50 million people subscribe, hey I'd pay anything up to £15 a month to play a game like that!!!

Maybe the people that made Freespace should make a Freespace MMO since everybody knows that free space was the best ever!!!

I am so with you on that man, +11111!!!!

I did some hunting yesterday on the net, and found Jumpgate Evolution, which must have looked promising, but unfortunately there seems to be some legal wrangling over game rights as the developers parent comapny got bought out. Now develeopment has (hopefully temporarily) stopped on that game.

In the meantime I ordered X3: Terran conflict yesterday. I know its not an MMO, but I need my space combat/trading fix! And this game has some great feedback.

As an aside, can we leave the WoW vs everything arguing out guys? That horse has been beaten to a pulp already, and the OP has made it clear he is looking for an alternative.
 
After reading up on Old republic, to me it doesn't really come across as an MMO, more of an RPG with multiplayer, which has disappointed me, though I could be wrong. I have to agree with a few posts here, the golden age of the MMO was definately UO, SWG, EQ and DAOC, I really miss playing those.
UO is still going, but its not the same game it used to be, and I have heard that there is another EQ game in the works.
I'm enjoying Rift at the moment, but I'm waiting to see if they smooth Mortal online over!
 
Everyone always goes back to wow, me included. i will be looking forward to guidwars 2 though ( sporting a guardian wallpaper )

I might try star wars as a trial though.

Wow engulfs you, if you was a PvE player, do some hardcore PVP. i was and i love playing now . a totally new aspect. :)
 
I never went back to WoW either. I hated it, it had no depth, a horrible community and a lack of any real end goal. I'm also not interested in PvP at all.

But surely this is a personal taste thing? In my opinion the best and most matured MMO on the market today is FFXI. It had its problems in the past, but right now I'm having some of the best MMO experiences I've ever had and I've played a lot of MMOs over the years. I've come back to this game 3 times now and its better than ever. They've really fixed many of the problems it had originally.
 
I detested WoW, and I don't say that as a kind of badge-of-pride thing. All my mates were playing it, and I tried really hard to get into it, but eugh :p

The thing I really hated about it was that it did its best to remind you that you were just playing a game - the cartoony graphics, the pop culture references shoved down your throat at every opportunity, it just didn't take itself seriously.

The fact that is was **** easy didn't help mind you :)

I tried that last night, didnt like the engine or the graphics though lol, I know people say gameplay is more important then graphics, but I think a game should have everything, it's 2011 after all.

It is a lot different to wow tho, it was cool how you could fight different with weapons etc. Good concept.

I must have tried over 20 mmo's now over past 6 years or so, and so far when it comes to graphics wow is the only mmo I can bare to look at. It's cartoonish but somehow it's all blended in nicely and looks good. A lot of people say the same thing.

I don't know what needs to be done....do they need to copy wow and make mmo's out of nice looking cartoonish graphics as a standard or can they make good looking graphics which are more realistic and less cartoonish?

I've heard people say many a time over the years that the reason blizzard made wow like that was because cartoonish graphics age well and so it's more feasable/reliable in the long run.

I know some people might reply to this and jump down my throat and say graphics arent everything, think about gameplay...I understand all that, and sometimes I play old games like half life 1 and 2 etc and even C&C and even though they dont look that great anymore, because I loved those games so much in the past I can still play them.

But thats the thing, when its a game you've never played before, it's hard to get in to it for most people when it looks ugly.

Surely they can make all mmo's with decent graphics in 2011? ok, maybe we cant have super physics like we do in crysis 2 etc but nice textures, instead of blocky and blurred textures.

Actually I forgot soemthing, I always thought eve looked nice as well....so imo if eve and wow can look nice then every other mmo should look nice...

Because if I login to an mmo and the graphics look as nice as wow or better, then I wouldnt have to think about that aspect of it, and could just focus on my 14 day trial and seeing weather or not the gameplay is any good.

They dont. Lotro and DDO have very up to date mature graphics which support DX11.

Age of Conan was the most graphically demanding DX10 based game on its releases, and when I played it on release I was completely awestruck by the quality of the graphics on maximum. It also took a very beastly system at the time to run, a 4870 or 8800 GTX just about managed to cope with AoC fully maxed out.

Guild Wars and Aion use a very similar artistic and stylized approach which is not cartoony or rubbish, the graphics in GW for example are unbelievably good for the low requirements they need to run. GW runs fully maxed out with 4x AA on an ancient Nvidia 6600 GT, or ATI X1600 pro, yet it still looks fantastic and remains one of the best looking MMOs because of how fantastic the art style and optimization of the engine is.

From what I've gathered, you've simply looked at nothing but WoW and said 'OMG all MMOs must look bad and cartoony'.

Download and play both Lotro and DDO for free, both definitely looked absolutely fantastic when I last played them.

I cant believe any of that. WoW looks completely crap compared to the MMOs I just named above:

AoC
Lotro
DDO
Aion
GW.

All of those five are vastly superior and far more pleasing to look at than WoW is.

Ok, now I'm gonna reinstall Lotro :p

I don't know why you said that, I already wrote on this post that I've tried loads of mmo's before.

I can't remember them all, but here's the ones off top of my head:
Eve
SWG
WoW
Warhammer
LOTR
Guild Wars
Conan
Fallen Earth
City of Heroes

And there's been others, I cant remember right now, out of all them ones above the only ones I played seriously was SWG, Eve, WoW, the rest I didnt like, but am gona download trial for conan today because I cant remember what that looks like, I tried it in beta if I remember rightly and their was lot of bugs and it didnt run smooth for me, so dont think I could give it a chance.

Well that's your opinion, but I dont think the word crap and wow go together, if you dont like the game fair enough, but it's won loads of awards, has the biggest user base, and most popular mmo and also biggest revenue and most people say wow is the best looking on the eyes, even people that dont play wow, or have never played wow, or detest wow, even say that wow is the prettiest of them all.

I purely meant the graphics only sorry, not the game. I thought that was obvious when I was replying to your post claiming that WoW is the only MMO you can bare to look at. That is an unbelievable joke comment, and people who say it are mostly WoW fanboys.

You're pretty hypocritical wanting a game that looks better than WoW, which just about every single one does, but then stating that you cant stand looking at anything that isnt WoW.

And I'm sure that you are purely trolling with that comment. Most people who dont play WoW purely hate the game because it looks pure ugly. No one that doesnt play the game has claimed that 'WoW is the prettiest of them all', they do nothing but complain about how bad the game looks.

Must confess that I wouldn't say wow is the prettiest mmo of them all, I would give that accolade to lotro, AoC or possibly even vanguard, but not wow. It's nicely stylized graphics, but not what I would think of as the prettiest looking mmo.
