What car, 15k?

The Scirocco is a good shout, although I think the new Megane is worth a look too.
However, it'll depreciate so much more than a VW.

What about an Alfa Romeo Brera or Volvo C30?

Yep the C30 is not a bad idea, I think the VW will hold its value very well. If you can get a 08 for 16k now it I would think it will still go for the best part of 9 to 10k in 3 years time

Might be bias, but for that sort of money and spec, clio 200 seems to fit. Damn good cars. Or a ST-3?

Why does it seem to fit? It doesn't fit at all. Why is everyone on here obsessed with recommending performance cars? The op made it quite clear that performance requirements were modest, he only wants over 140bhp.

200bhp cars are overkill.

its not an easy one to pick, most of the one year old 15k stuff isn't going to be particularly different / quirky.

Your best bet would probably be an Alfa if you like them, a GT or Mito would probably get into that price range.

There is also the CR-Z - thats pretty different although it it only really seats 2 comfortably.

It really shouldn't be hard to narrow down the options on autotrader...

Y...you mean he isn't looking for a Japanese imported 220bhp, 9krpm redline, Honda Civic Type R or a 5 cyl, 2.5l turbo, 225bhp hot hatch?

The clio ticks everyone of the criteria, im not saying its perfect, but im pretty sure its where my money would go. It also states it should be over 140, implying anything less is too slow, meaning something around 180-200 should be perfect :)

Cheers for all the suggestions so far, interesting reading.

Slightly older I know, but any thoughts on a 57 plate 123d at 13.5k?

I think it goes against the principles of every member of the Motors forum to recommend a car for £15,000 that would be boring to drive after about 1 minute.

What car would you recommend for £15,000?

But it completely depends on the criteria of the person buying, doesn't it? If the person buying isn't after a car that leaves them sweating with excitement after driving it, infact specifically states that over 140bhp would be sufficient, then there is little point them spending the extra money (or compromising with an older car at the same pricepoint) in purchase price and then the extra running costs to own a performance car.

Lots of people, infact the majority of people, just want a normal car and not a tarmac ripping 200bhp hot hatchback.

The criteria said 'Performance is not top of the list' and 'Under 1 year old'. Does this sound like the requirements of somebody who really needs a 20mpg Focus ST?

I can't think of anything. Which is preferably to just posting random stuff thats quite clearly not suitable.

The running cost's of a Clio Sport 200 vs say, a Ford Focus 2.0 is not going to particularly far apart is it?

I'm think it's a good thing informing the OP of what he COULD get instead of what he think's he "should" get, then be stuck with it for 3-5 years and bored of it after 1 week or whatever.

I'm with Fox on this one. Having a budget of up to £15,000 is lovely and coupled with the requirement of something fast car is great. But if you're looking for something that isn't particularly exciting, then you can easily get away with spending half that and still be happy.

You can probably save a bit by going for a Golf equivalent.

But then you end up in a Renault Clio. A car which, at everything other than being a great chuckable hot hatch, is simply inferior to a Ford Focus. Therefore, for a normal person, the Focus is the better car.

Because normal people dont get 'bored' of a car with less than 200bhp because it 'isnt fast enough'.

To most people, a car is a way of getting from A to B. Sure, they want one that looks nice - most of us buy on looks - and it's good to get one thats half decent, well made, isn't wallowy or whatever, but at the end of the day most people have different priorities to us car enthusiasts.

Would I buy a normal car for £15k? Hell no. Infact I wouldnt even bother to test drive anything with under 250bhp now. But guess what - I can seperate my own needs from those of others and therefore don't need to push my personal tastes on everyone else in 'What Car?' threads.

The irony is that I'm the one with a reputation of pushing my tastes onto others and ignoring the real requirements.

People who say 'Performance is not top of the list, although it should be over 140bhp' do not need to rush out and buy a 200bhp plastic Clio.

if thats the coupe its a very nice car but I think they started in 08 so I assume its the hatch back which looks very boring.
